Costco has great fish. Good meats too. They will give you your widest selection.

There are also specialty seafood markets scattered all over the state that only have seasonal catch. There's a market west of Roseburg that gets a truckload of Dungeness crab at the beginning of the season, and you have to park 100 yards from the store it's so busy.

In Southern Oregon you would be better off to look in Grants Pass. At least it's on the highway to the coast, which Medford and Ashland are not. In Medford, check Sherm's, which runs Costco some heavy competition. They will have some outstanding fresh seafood from time to time.

If you want really fresh seafood you have to catch it yourself and put it on ice as soon as it comes out of the ocean.

Nope, but the title said "Fresh Seafood in Oregon" so I wasn't just limiting my suggestion to one area.

Where is the fresh seafood in Grocery stores?
Keep in mind that today's frozen seafood is frequently actually fresher than what passes for fresh in the grocery store seafood case.

Flash freezing techniques used by processors result in a product that's highly superior to yesterday's frozen fish. When something's frozen fast, the enzymes etc. that give it its fresh qualities don't break down to the extent that they do when it takes several hours to freeze.

Many of the good folks in the Pacific Northwest love fishing for trout, steelhead, salmon (kokanee, coho, chinook) , sometimes sturgeon. Some waterways you can get a mess of crappie, large perch, smallmouth bass. On the coast they go for clams, go out in the boat for crab, rockfish.

The friendly folks on www.oregonfishingforum.com & www.ifish.net like to help with questions & stories...

Many fisherfolks have a BBQ & a smoker in their back yard...

The oceans are severely fished out. Oregon has a history of conservation. Therefore fishing seasons in Oregon are very short in order to limit the damage to the fish stocks. The number of fish that the fishermen can take is very limited.

If you want fresh Oregon seafood, you will have to wait for it to be in season, and the season will be short.

Year round, you can get fresh farmed salmon and maybe mussels. There might be some fresh farmed trout. Other than that, you can get imported fish or frozen fish.

The word from the commercial fishermen in Chile is that the ocean around Chile is fished out. They go out all day and probably catch nothing.

The Japanese go out in factory ships and pull up and kill everything in a 1 mile diameter hole in the ocean. No young fish spared to become breeding stock for the future.

The British fishermen sell "Black fish". Under size fish sold to buyers behind the docks, illegally. Again, they are removing the breeding stock for the future.

So, if you enjoy seafood, eat it now, because there isn't going to be any in the future, except what comes off the coast in the USA and Canada during the 3 day Halibut season and the 7 day salmon season.

I agree with this. We have Fitts here in Salem and it is seasonal because it is fresh. I think most of us wait for Dungeness Crab season like we wait for Oregon strawberry season.

Since you are a foodie, you will learn to love the "food seasons" we have here in Oregon. I love to cook and was so excited that we had local strawberries in the store for Mother's Day. I don't have any issues finding fresh fish in Salem, but maybe the people you asked weren't really fish eaters??
