Got this on my phone and thought I'd post a quick notice for anyone traveling through Southern Oregon, the Cascades and Siskiyous, including all the passes:

Quote:
Statement as of 2:43 AM PDT on May 20, 2013, ... Unseasonably cold temperatures and pass level snow expected this week...

A strong system will move into the region this week... and remain overhead for several days. A potent cold front will sweep through southern Oregon and northern California Tuesday afternoon and evening... introducing an unseasonably cold air mass to the area. Strong gusty winds and widespread precipitation will
accompany the front as it passes... and temperatures will fall sharply.

Snow levels may drop to around 2500 feet by Wednesday morning... and therefore could result in 2 to 5 inches of snow over all Cascade passes... Siskiyou Summit... and The Mount Shasta area. Snow levels may drop briefly down to lower passes like Sexton Summit as well.
I was going to put in some warm weather veggies this week, but with temps dropping into the low 20s, not even frost covers can save them. Mmmmmaybe next week.

500MB heights will really be coming down after tomorrow and through the weekend. This is a dangerous thing. People (especially flatland dwellers) are mostly in full on "summer" mode now and can easily get themselves in trouble in the high country due to lack of preparedness (or due to being of the perpetual fair weather bent, and completely unsuitable in terms of vehicles and skills for any sort of winter anything).

In the Rogue Valley the coldest nighttime temp predicted is Tuesday night at 39 degrees. If weather man is accurate, i doubt we will get any snow here. Weather Forecast | KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2 | Local news for Southern Oregon & Northern California

Dunno, Hawk, the current Medford forecast is:

Tuesday
Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain, then rain showers in the afternoon. High of 64F. Breezy. Winds from the WNW at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Chance of rain 70%.
Tuesday Night
Mostly cloudy with a chance of snow and rain. Low of 34F. Winds from the NW at 5 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph shifting to the WSW after midnight. Chance of snow 80%.

Of course, this last winter the prediction kept getting dire a couple of days out and then evaporating as it got closer

"Snow levels are expected to drop to around 2800 feet by Wednesday
morning... bringing in 3 to 6 inches of snow over all Cascade
passes and 1 to 3 inches over Siskiyou Summit. Snow amounts of 3
to 6 inches are possible on the higher portions of bear Camp Road.
Snow levels may drop briefly down to lower passes like Sexton
Summit as well. However... with the longer days and higher sun
angles soil and Road temperatures are quite warm... and it will be
difficult for snow to accumulate.".............. according to Wunderground.com

East of the Cascades...really cold. 20's

I just hope we get some real rain out of this. We need it!

That is not true in Southern Oregon.

Usually down toward Medford it gets nice by late April, temps in the 70s and sunny, and overnight frost is not common. Over on my side, in the high desert, we can get frosts through mid-June, although not usually hard freezes or snow (they happen, but they are rare). Here as well it is usually sunny and mild in May, which I tend to think of as the beginning of summer. By June it is usually full summer.
