Tell me about Oregon's wine country!

One of my husband's friends raved about Oregon's wine country, saying the wine is just as good as what's in Napa Valley. His friend constantly travels to the world's most exotic destinations to the point he's out of the country more than he's home in Pittsburgh. Even though he can afford anything and everything, he's a very down to earth guy who appreciates true quality, not labels and status symbols.

Since we prefer to go off the beaten path, we're intrigued.

The northern part of Oregon does especially well with pinot noir and other cool-season grapes. The small, boutique wineries seem to do this best.

There is a good pinot here but I wouldn't age it any longer:

I live right in the middle of the Oregon Wine Country, and alas I am a teetotaler.

The wines in Oregon are considered world wide as the best there is. And if you like Sweet Fruit Wines, you won't find a better quality that those produced here.

Are you thinking about visiting Oregon wine country? There are a few different regions. Yamhill County and the Applegate Valley areas are probably the most well known. You can find little places with just a small wooden sign pointing you down a gravel road to the tasting room where you can find unique small batch wines, but there are also larger wineries. Some have concerts in the summer; a few of them have pretty good farm-to-fork restaurants attached to them. Washington State is also producing good wines.

And stop in the Dallas Area. Our Polk County Wineries are adding new vineyards again. Polk County just passed an ordinance to allow small wineries to serve food.

We have many great local vineyards. My personal favorites are

Cubanisimo
Evesham Wood
Torri Mor
Scott Paul

Sokol Blosser also makes a delicious picnic wine.
Illahe Vineyards has a yummy Riesling

No lack of good wine in the area. Many are small and only open a couple of times a year.
