I might be taking a job in the Portland area next year. I would like to live in a smaller sleepy suburb outside of the city to get away from the hustle and bustle. I love hills and trees and scenery. I would also prefer an area that is diverse, as we are a mixed-race couple and our child is of mixed race (I was looking at some demographics of surrounding counties and they were over 90% white). If possible, a decent sized home that could fit a growing family for under $300k. And I don't know if Oregonians are beach goers, but the beach is a very regular part of our lives and my toddler LOVES the beach, so I'd hope to be in distance enough to make a day trip twice a month during the spring and summer (if Spring is even warm up there). Any suggestions on where to begin looking?

FYI the coast is about a 90 minute drive from Portland.

The Oregon coast is very different from the warm California beaches.
If your kid likes cold water, wind, rain, and cool temperatures, he'll love it!

Sounds you want to live in Washington County (see below), and since I have little knowledge of neighborhoods out there, I'll let other posters comment on that.

Salem is less than 90% white, and Independence even more so. Only an hour from the cold and windy beaches of Lincoln City too.

Where is the job located? That will be the major factor in deciding where to live. Washington County is closer to the beach, but if your job is in Gresham you'll want to live in a suburb on that side of the city.

For that matter, much of Portland is the same as the Suburbs.

Oregon's Beach is in Hawai'i BTW. But the Oregon Coast is a nice place to visit, you can even go swimming on 90+ degree days

Awesome. I'll check out Washington County. The job will be in Portland. I've heard good things about Hillsboro. I still need to look at housing prices. Hoping to get some really good yard space for a decent price (if that's even realistic, in CA it's not). Sounds like there won't be many beach days though : (

FYI, the only reason I care about diversity is because of my kid. Most adults on the west coast could care less what color your skin is, but grade school kids like to pick on others for any little difference. I know from experience.

When the weather man predicts the Brookings weather to be 92, go to the beach there during those few warm days...

Even on a warm day, it is not advisable for a toddler to be swimming in the ocean without very close adult supervision and maybe even then. I think it's just too dangerous. But playing in the sand is definitely doable. There are lakes in the Portland area though where people go to swim. Good luck with the job. Hillsboro is a nice suburb.
