We've been having some local fires. It's pretty scary. Right now I'm hearing helicopters and tankers. Does anyone know if there is a new fire, today, near Merlin/Hugo area??

Probably the Pacifica fire (near Williams in Josephine County)

Wildfire - Oregon Dept of Forestry: 500-acre Pacifica Fire in SW Oregon fully lined

Behind the paywall, the Medford Tribune says:

WILLIAMS — After an hours-long battle with a wildfire that grew to more than 500 acres and torched a house, several vehicles and some outbuildings Friday, crews have the blaze under control.

Oregon Department of Forestry officials said the fire, which started near the Pacifica Garden nature and arts center in Williams, is currently in a mop-up phase. Appropriate lines have been drawn to help prevent further spread, with crews extinguishing remaining hot spots.

The Williams fire is about 30 miles south of us. Didn't hear any equipment, yesterday. Today, I could hear them but only for a short time. We had a smaller, yet serious, fire in Merlin two days ago. Grants Pass had a fire a few weeks ago. It makes me nervous. I wish that all our neighbors would cut their weed fields.

Thanks for the links. I've been smelling smoke here on the outskirts of Sherwood for the last hour. It must be too small for these websites to acknowledge though. Anyone know of something up this way?

I checked the links, too. BTW....thanks, PNW. It seems they only post the big fires. It is unnerving to smell smoke and not know the source.
It looks like it's going to be a bad fire season.

We recut the fire breaks around our property and even did a bit of preventive work (mowing, tree trimming, breaking up some brush piles) on the vacant 20 acres to the west of us - since the absentee owner won't.

It's very frustrating to see all the tall weeds on the adjoining properties (two sides). We keep ours cut to the ground.
One of my neighbors also keeps her place, but the builder/owner on a place behind her cleared all his brush and piled it next to her fence. It's a huge pile and by now it's really dry and ready to burn!! It looks like they built a house to sell, and we've already been over once to try to find someone responsible. I think we need to go back.

You might try the Fire Marshall - often they will cite a property owner and give them a time frame to clear it up. The guy who owns the 20 acres next door has gotten a couple citations over the years and he removed the four 20' x 40' brush piles he'd gathered on the property (aka "instant bonfire! just add spark!").

I'm pretty sure we don't have a Fire Marshall. There are several Fire Departments, but we need to pay for their service. We don't pay thru property taxes.
