Astoria is pretty variable, as far as personality goes. It really depends on where and who you interact with.
There really isn't a lot to do in Astoria, besides shopping. There's a movie theater, bowling alley, and several good dining places. You can always watch the sports events for the local high schools, but overall, activities aren't the strong point of Astoria - that's Seaside's strong point.
However, it's a real quiet town, and no one will try to poke into your business. I hear quite a few people retire to Astoria.
Also, apparently, home prices have jacked up desperately. I heard an estimate that said it is 25% more expensive to buy a home in Astoria than it was just five years ago.
I go to school at the local community college, and, having been born in Astoria, I think of all the people I've met in Astoria, I haven't had a huge impression of Astoria, but I would never tell anyone that walking along on the docks and piers at night isn't just the most calming experience I've ever had.

Just a note - as of last night, Astoria was still without power according to our information. Actually, the area from Seaside north to Astoria is in the same situation.
We had our power back on about 80 miles south in 40 hours - for the most part. Phones finally came back on yesterday as well - nearly 72 hrs after disruption ... although cell-phones were actually disrupted earlier.

ok let's hear from the "old timers" about the best way to waterproof those houses for the winter storms in Astoria. What's the modern way?

Back when I was growing up in the mid and late 70's I used to thumb a ride from Portland to Warrenton to visit my best friend, we would end up in Astoria alot. don't recall too much of it other than having one way streets all over. (yes the 70's was good to me..lol) the things I do remember that no one has said is that there is the ship wreck of the "Peter Ardale" (I know I did not spell that right) and "Fort Stephens" in the vacinity. It has been almost 30 yrs since I was there but as an older teen there was a lot of things to do and explore. I also remember there were some boats that you could charter for fishing trips..and there is the Coast Gaurd training center near there. not sure if they still allow it but back then we would dig for razer clams at some of the beaches between Warrenton and Astoria...

sorry to bore you with old memories..
