When I said, "What kind of defensible space are you talking about?" I meant, "What the State of Oregon recommends and illustrates?"
Oregon Department of Forestry Home Wildfire Safety
Creating defensible space around your home is the best way to protect your home from wildfire. ... 30 feet surrounding your home.....

Which studies of the devastating Bastrop County wildfire found:

"Of 341 homes that we studied and were destroyed in the fire, 85% had defensible space of at least 30 feet," Karen Ridenour — the principal researcher and author of the study and fire researcher for the Texas Forest Service — told the Statesman. "This tells me we have to stop telling people 30 feet. We need to push that number out a lot farther."

My point is the 30 foot rule is not enough and Oregon.gov needs updating.

Back to the OP........the drive from The Dalles to Obrist Road is 14 miles yet takes 38 minutes and no doubt longer for a loaded water truck. No wonder the firefighter lamented.

The lightning strikes are probably due to the micro-climate change caused by the wind farms.

Hmm, the paperwork I got had a lot more requirements for "defensible space" than just the primary 30' radius - there were 3 zones around the house. We did all the suggestion in the publication below plus we cut (and maintain) a 10' wide firebreak all the way around the property
