I live in Alaska and was recently hired in Coos Bay, Oregon and need help in deciding if I should take the job or not. It is a 20k a year paycut but the cost of living is cheaper. Winter is upon us almost and I hate to think of another winter in the cold. Also, my sons are really into Hockey and is there any other sports in the area? I have a 16 year old and am worried about the crime and meth heads which is all I hear on other postings. Where I currently live, we never lock our doors and have never had anything stolen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did go there for an interview and it seemed nice....although I didnt see any fine dining restaurants or really anywhere to go out socially too.....or anyone dressed up which I like to do. Is there such places (Casino maybe??) or do you have to drive into a larger city?

I don't live in Coos Bay, but I'm familiar with the area and have lived my life between Alaska and Oregon. Most of the time, I spend part of each year in both places.

Things are definitely less expensive in Oregon, and I can certainly sympathize with you about the cold. I love the fact that winters aren't so long in Oregon.

Do you have an "out" in case the move doesn't work out? I've seen a lot of people move down and deeply regret it.

Your closest Ice Rink to Coos Bay is almost two hours away. There is fine dining in Coos Bay, but everyone wears jeans and a nice shirt - most people down there simply don't have much better clothing. Florence has a couple of fine dining places in the old town area that are more dress up.

You should search this forum for other Coos Bay threads. I love Coos Bay, but wouldn't live there unless I was wealthy.

If your children were born and raised in Alaska, the adjustment might be tough for them. You don't say what part of the state you're in or how long you've been there, but I'd consider waiting until my 16 year old was in college before I made a major move. The culture shock involved in moving to the -48 is huge, even to parts of rural Oregon.

If you have the cash, Coos Bay will be your oyster.

I hear that good paying jobs there are a rarity, so you will be able to live above the rest, and enjoy what Coos Bay has to offer.

That may make Coos Bay very tolerable for you.

You also might look into living in the towns around Coos Bay.
