Not to many years ago my wife and I spent some quality, well deserved vacation time in Clatsop County. It was a breath of fresh air considering we live in a population of well over a million people. After raising pur children and sending them off into the world we've decide mom and dad need a slower paced existence.
We are both in the hospitality industry. My wife has been the Front Office Manager of a few resorts and small family owned properties and I've been the Chief Engineer at those same properties. As you can see our chosen careers have allowed us the opportunity to work together. On occasion I ha e ventured out into a restaurant or two as a cook, cause I love cooking and food.
What's everyone's prospective on Astoria. Working wise...we know it rains which we don't care let it pour. Just need something to pay the rent and let us hang out. Semi retirement ahead...
Thank you for reading and we appreciate your responses.

There aren't a lot of hotels in Astoria itself, what are there tend to be pretty small and owner/family run. But, you have some flexibility, you can look for jobs as far south as Cannon Beach, and as far north as Long Beach. I would also encourage you to be open minded about jobs, look in other tourist related areas such as working at Fort Stevens/Fort Clatsop, one of the museums, or with fishing boats.

Thank you for your reply. We are certainly open to something else to do job wise. Never to old to learn something new. We've actually worked in the fishing industry back in 2000 in Newport, Oregon. Good job, smelly though lol.

If you're open to something closer to Newport than Astoria, you could look for work at Salishan | I am a resort person and/or google "oregon coast resorts" for more options.

The only up scale hotel I know of in Astoria is Cannery Pier Hotel, you can also check out places in Ilwaco and Long Beach, WA.

Salishan is a good suggestion and a nice resort with proximity to Lincoln City. I don't like LC as much as Astoria, but it has some upsides.

There are a lot more hotels in Astoria now than when I first started going a decade or two back, so I wouldn't say it's hopeless (also a fair amount of B&B competition it seems), but it is quite possible most are family held/run.

If you have been reading this forum you have seen it 100 times already, but I'll say it again. Don't move before you have a job.

There are jobs in the lodging industry, but many have no benefits to offer. That seems to be very true on the coast. I am only familiar with one large operation and they offer no, as in zero, benefits.
