I am moving to Oregon/Washington area in a several weeks and I want to buy a new (maybe used) car. And sell my old one that is acting up.

I am facing problems.

- I cannot use my current address in Kansas, because I will be moving out within a month.
- I still don't know my new address in my new state.
- I don't want to register a car and pay over $1000 in Kansas sales tax if I will be only very briefly in this state.

Anyone has a suggestion on how to proceed?

Rent a car in Kansas and buy one here when you arrive? That was easy.

Yep. You buy a car there, you will pay the tax.

Of course the rental and drop fee may be more than the Kansas Tax.

I don't know if Kansas uses salt on their roads in the winter? But we don't in Oregon, so an Oregon used car would not have the body rust problems seen in the East.

So you basically want to say that if I decide to repair my old car, drive it to Oregon and sell it there, it would be less value, because of it?

Btw. I think Kansas uses salt on the roads, but fortunately my car has no rust. It has all sorts of other problems though

No, I'm saying a used car purchased in Oregon would not have the problem of rust due to road salt - perhaps one less problem to worry about.

As for resale value, if it looks ok, I imagine there would be no difference in what you could sell it for.

And used cars tend to break down. If taking a used car on a long trip and it were to break down, you might be stuck paying an outrageous amount to get it fixed - no choice. (I once had to pay $900 for towing, "diagnosis", and repair for a problem I could have fixed myself at home for $200.)

Howdy tondoo

To be safe, I always keep Good Sam Emergency Road Service on my vehicles. For a car/pickup, coverage runs about $65 a year.
