I was actually thinking about relocating from Chicago to Portland, but went with Denver instead. Oregon will be a frequent vacation spot. I was out there in January and did a good chunk of the coast. It was incredible (especially since it was sunny and in the 50s and 60s there and way below freezing in Chicago and snowing). It would have been better if I made it up to Lincoln City a day earlier for some monster waves. I was a day late seeing the monster waves at Nelscott Reef.

Florence down to Bandon was really cool. Parking at Washburne Beach (just north of Florence), hiking the China Creek Trail up Heceta Head and then down to the Hobbit Trail and down Washburne Beach to my car was pretty cool.

I also recommend John Dellenback Trail...it isn't as epic as Great Sand Dunes NP, but it is nice and memorable: https://www.flickr.com/photos/massey...7640101452503/

PS The high desert is beautiful...especially the San Luis Valley. Also I think some of the areas you are going to have rattlesnakes, so watch where you step, sit, and put your hands...

Amphibians and Reptiles of Oregon

One last thing...Oregonians hate this, but you should live and work in southern Washington near Vancouver (no income tax) and do all of your shopping in Oregon (no sales tax)...

Thank you so much for your responses. We have been on a quest to find a place to call home and nothing has "fit " well so far. So I am really looking forward to this trip! I think we will go down to Corvallis and even south to Ashland since we have the time. Thanks for the recommendations!

Honest, if you live and work in WA but do your shopping in OR we don't mind at all. The State of WA does, however, because they depend on sales tax for their revenue.

If you're in Ashland I'd say it's worth stopping off to check out Jacksonville. But both Ashland/Jville are pricey for housing, so if you're on a normal peoples' budget you'd probably be looking at actually living in Medford/Talent or farther out at Grants Pass.
