I was born and raised in Portland. In my teens I used to spend weekends exploring the many areas of Oregon. I always loved crossing over the bridge and decending down into North Bend and Coos Bay. I immediately felt that I was in a different climate than that found north of the bay. 'Oregon myrtles', madronas and other broadleaf evergreen trees began to appear and increased in number the farther south I'd drive. While it doesn't have the subrtopical climate of Brookings, Coos Bay's winters are mild enough to grow some of the tender plants seen hundreds of miles south in California. Shore Acres gardens is a wonderful example. Southwest Oregon is my favorite part of Oregon but I'm a city person and all of the cities down there are too small for me to want to move to any of them. I'll keep visiting them as often as I can, tho.

Question Anybody worried?

We're seriously wanting to move to Coos Bay. We've been wanting to relocate to the coast and have been checking out CB for over a year now. Just got back from a couple of days there. The people seem so friendly and it's so beautiful. But this LNG proposal is scary. What do you all think?

Ok, the only thing better than having great weather in Oregon is great weather on the coast! I just checked the web cam, it's beautiful....I'm so jealous!
Was curious if you just made the move recently? We're not so particular if it's NB or CB. It's all the bay area. How did you find your place? Local paper, online? Hope to make it happen soon!

My wife, 2 year old son, and Myself are headed to NB/CB from Virginia in the next few months. We're native Westcoasters being from Northern Washington and excited about being back on that side of the country. We have lot's of things to figure out however so if anyone has ideas or directions to look into I'm all ears.
We are going to be renting - need a 3-4 bedrooms and and 2 baths hoping to stay under $1400/month - we also have a very well behaved golden retriever so it has to be dog friendly - prefer a fenched yard.
Any leads on childcare? Ideally Spanish speaking but not essential.
Any thoughts on CB vs NB for living? Both seem fine in the couple short visits we've made.
Very general questions I know but I figured I'd throw them out incase anyone has directions to point me.
Thanks in advance.

Thumbs up We are most likely coming too!

My wife and I are probably going to be moving there in a few months. We are currently in Lafayette, LA. and we are sick and tired of this 100 degree heat in 95%+ humidity! My wife is from Wyoming and I lived there for 5 years and I miss the cooler summers and even cooler nights. Call me a wimp but I HATE hot weather. The only reason we moved back over here on this side of the US is because of family and I missed the trees and grass.

We have been back about 3 years now and ready for a cooler area. I have been researching the Coos Bay area for about a week now and from what ive read on here its perfect. My wife and I are early 30s, non smoker, non drinker, non drug users and we are quiet and keep to ourselves. We dont go out and party like most of the people our age here in Lafayette. We mostly rent movies or veg out on the couch in front of the TV or we go to a nice restaurant or go see a movie.

We dont go to the mall and spend money so the lack of a huge mall IS a plus for us. We sometimes go to Wal-Mart but the Wal-Mart here is always crowded. Call us introverted but we dont care for big crowds in stores, we want to get in and buy what we need and get out! We like going to public functions like festivals and whatnot for culture so the events that Coos Bay has sounds great. The area seems to have a lot to offer as well what with hiking and whale watching, etc.

We dont care about the lack of sunny days, we are actually fed up with the sun here. We like it when it rains, correction - we LOVE it when it rains here and we love it when its overcast and foggy (aka no sun! lol). We both have been looking for an area thats livable with the kind of weather/climate that Coos Bay has and I think its perfect. We would love to visit but we live too far away to do so, so what we are going to do is wait until our apt lease gets close to expiring then we will get jobs there and relocate.

If we dont like it we can always move elsewhere. No kids yet so wont be tied down. It seems like we wont want to leave anyway so im not worried to say the least! I checked out the job market and theres actually A LOT of jobs I would be qualified and happy to do there, so I dont see how people are saying he job market is bad.

If you call that bad then thats alright to me because I saw a LOT of jobs that both me and my wife would be perfect for. Oh well, I guess its as the saying goes, one mans paradise is another mans hell. Anyways, hope to seel you all there!

Coos Bay is in a great part of the coast. The nearby dunes and awesome beauty of the coastline going south from Bandon to the California border are not to be missed. I was there in June and caught some beautiful weather, which skews your view a bit, but I think it would be a nice place to live. I got hot at the Mill Bay Casino in town which was an added bonus See my pictures of Coos Bay and the Central & South Coast on my site Jason's Oregon Photoblog Introduction
