Hello all,

I work in Tigard and my girlfriend works in downtown Portland. We are looking to buy a house in the next couple years. For a while now, we have been on the lookout for an area with a nice, quaint Main Street (i.e. downtown, town-center area). We currently live in Sellwood, but the home prices are too expensive (we're looking in the $350,00 range) and the home's are too close together. We really like the Camas downtown area, but worry that the commute over the river will be too much.

So, I'm wondering if the community has any recommendations as to a town with a nice little downtown (e.g., tree-lined streets, mom and pop shops, friendly, clean, etc.)?

Thanks!

St. John's is being gentrified but still has a grungy feel. They have a cute town center. DON'T buy those condos on Leavitt.

Curious if you've looked at Forest Grove. Quaint and tree-lined, certainly.

Hey there, thanks for the replies. I have checked out Forest Grove. I was really excited about the place because it sounded perfect - but, I ended up feeling like it was run down and felt a bit dead (as opposed to quiet). But, I'm going to go up there again soon. It's entirely possible I just caught it on a bad day or something.

Hmmm Silverton . . . haven't checked that out yet. How are the schools in Forest Grove and Silverton?

If I recall from the other thread, your spouse works downtown. The commute to Tigard from Silverton would be, on average, shorter than Camas, but in terms of going downtown I'd probably take Camas over Silverton since at least you could bus.

I'd cross off McMinnville for the same reason.

Schools in FG and Silverton are probably not what you're looking for, true.

Multnomah Village, Sherwood (around the town square, away from 99W) and Newberg would all be good places to look. There's also a Main Street town center in Tigard that might qualify as quaint.
