I saw a article about this on PBS (I believe) awhile back, what a cool idea, we are planning a trip to that area this summer, may just have to pedal the rails.

There's also a train where the guys in the front do the pedaling for you: Eagle Cap Excursion Train | Ride a train through northeast Oregon's dramatic landscape.

Besides Wallowa Lake and environs, Joseph is an artsy town, and Wallowa is a historic town, which, along with most of the little towns in the area, has a heavy concentration of Native American Indian influences and culture, which makes its way into parks, retail establishments, and historical markers, among other things. David Manuel used to have his foundry in Joseph (it's now located at the old Hot Lake Hotel, between La Grande and Union), and you can still see his artistic influence there in the many, many bronze sculptures of animals and country/cowboy life just about everywhere in the area.

IMHO, Wallowa County is one of the most beautiful places in all of Oregon. Just driving along and enjoying the scenery, with stops at little towns, pretty parks, and Wallowa Lake is enough for most people. Its beauty is awe-inspiring, and pretty much beyond words. It's absolutely heavenly for those of us who love photography! It's probably just as well that there are few jobs in the area, or it would undoubtedly just become another over-crowded, expensive tourist trap!

There certainly is! I've even found a few flecks of it in the river, when we decided to rent gold pans and do some of our own panning for gold as a fun activity :-).
