As opposed to 99.9999% of the vocal public , I have no problem with these people other than their rampant capitalistic tendencies, which, on a good night, I see as a plus, but anyways...

Any wacky hippie /hipster types in Methford?

By the way, I prefer SA to Austin specifically because it's sh***y and it knows it.
So I have no problem not moving to Portland or Eugene, and, in fact, I myself am not a hipster.

Just enjoy wacky people.

Hit me with your best shot, people.
Tell me to move to PDX, I have. Tell me: Eugene, Whitaker is more your style! Been there. Etc.

So, does Medford have wacky, tacky, artistic people...in comparison to the flyover states?

Thanks!

Austin is almost 900,000 people. San Antonio is over a million. Medford is 77,000 and just doesn't have the density to have that kind of differentiated population. So, no, you are not going to find huge numbers of "hipsters" (IMO a vague term, everyone seems to have a different definition).

Medford is a mostly blue-collar town. It does have a small but growing art scene, tone of wineries, microbreweries - even bars that cater primarily to the Bud crowd serve at least a microbrew or two and probably the detestable PBR.

Ashland, on the other hand, is a very small town but does have strong niche populations - college students, "New Hippies" (under 35) and "Old Hippies" (wealthy retired hippies).

Actually metro-Austin is fast closing in on 2 million and metro San Antonio is well past that. Austin is home to the 5th largest university in the country and there are probably 4x more college students in Austin than there are people in Medford.

Portland is the only city between Seattle and San Francisco that has any similarity to Austin.

Lot of hipsters in Austin, lot of old hippies too (who run the place). San Antonio is a different demographic than that of Austin, there are hipsters, but their numbers are dwarfed by a huge population that doesn't know what the word "hipster" means...

I saw a hipster once in Medford. He seemed very lost and alone.

I think I saw the same guy and I believe he found his way out of town. By the way, what is a "hipster".

The spouse plays guitar in a band and does sound for bands and events in the Rogue Valley, plus we have a lot of musicians friends. Certain bands attract a more hipster crowd (as some bands attract dreadlocked younger crowds or boot-scootin' crowds or metalheads or Young/Old hippies or New-Agers, to use a few more stereotypes like "hipster") so they do exist, it is just that the valley is not really big enough to have a hipster district like Portland does.

The problem with the usual vague physical definition of "hipster" is that it comes perilously close to "average casual northwesterner," particularly on the male side - jeans, plaid or flannel shirts, maybe a beard and an asymmetric haircut, maybe a pork pie hat. Maybe gortex boots, maybe Keds high tops (hey, I LOVE my hightops, particularly the ones with sequins or embroidery on them, lol).
