What are the best grape growing regions in Oregon? I have heard the Apple gate Vally is up and coming. Any other spots worthy of note? I am a Zinfandel fan, but Merlots hit the spot also!

Depends on what kind of grapes you want to grow. Merlot grapes grow quite well in the Rogue Valley in Oregon. You can't beat Yamhill county for Pinot grapes. I don't think that much zinfandel is grown in OR; I think that there's a small winery in the Columbia Valley which has had some success.

The "big three" are the Columbia Valley, the Willamette Valley, and the Rogue Valley. These in turn are all divided up into different AVA subregions. The Rogue Region, for example, includes Illinois Valley, Applegate Valley and Bear Creek Valley appellations.

Other than drinking wine, I couldn't tell you where the best areas to grow wine grapes are in Oregon. I can however tell you the areas richest with vineyards & wineries. Check out the Applegate area NW of Medford, the Umpqua Valley all throughout Douglas County, Western Lane County and the Willamette Valley for a large number of vineyards, several of which produce some exquisite wines!
