The out-of-state retirees have ruined Florence. I suppose if Florence has kept them away from our other towns, it serves a sort of purpose. I used to not mind them so much when I lived here part-time, but after being stuck here through the pandemic, I've had enough.

The real problem is that urban California is just a LOT more productive than rural Oregon. People generate a lot more wealth there. The only way you could really put the brakes on it would be to prohibit property sales on the coast to "outsiders" which would crash property values and no doubt be an unconstitutional taking of private property if coastal property owners could no longer sell to the highest bidder, but only to "locals".

^ There's probably no real way to fix it, and maybe it shouldn't be fixed. Let them have Florence. I just get tired of living in a town full of old busybodies who think everything is for them.

And they're so pretentious and weird. The first thing they tell you about themselves is that their dog is a "rescue." They don't say "this is my dog," they say "this is my rescue." Rescue dogs must be the lifestyle accessory du jour for the California retiree. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for rescue, but the virtue signalling and trying to make them into a status symbol is just weird, but I guess they've got nothing else.
