Im speaking only of internet service providers. They are private sector. They have chosen not to wire up rural oregon as it does not make business sense to do so. Therefore, if rural oregonians want hsi, their best bet is government running fiber, which is already being done. Many conservative, chamber of commerce types in those areas are smart enough to see this and are willing to bite the ideological bullet. Sort of like "anti-gubmint" farmers in iowa living off of subsidies. Poilitical utopians eventually have to join the real world. The pragmatic business folks in rural or who support gov fiber are blocked by the libertarian puritans and the anti-vaxx, black helicopter, chemttails crowd who oppose gov fiber. Until rural oregonians slap those folks back to planet earth, they aint getting any hsi better than satellite.

I agree thats the only way rural areas are going to get broadband. If not for the Rural Electrification Act of 1936, most rural areas still wouldn’t have electricity today.

Yeah, the conservative business types need to either put their money where their mouths are or push for government action on rural infrastructure investment for HSI. Whenever the subject of wages, upward mobility (lack of), and income disparity comes up, their answer is "improve your education," "start a business," "take initiative." Access to HSI is a vital and relatively inexpensive way to actually DO those things from one's home, wherever it may be.

It was my understanding that some of those taxes and communication fees we pay to the cable/internet companies was supposed to go to the government for rural access. Whatever happened to that?

Woah. OP when I read your post it immediately made me think of this thread: //www.city-data.com/forum/real-...ake-house.html

It's not Oregon. But it is in a rural area of Michigan that is known for hunting and the outdoors. The house isn't fancy my any means, it needs some TLC (it ain't pretty)... but lots of space and easy access to hunting, ATV'ing, hiking, whatever. Plus the home and land is going for $49K. Seriously.

In case that link doesn't work, here's the address: 14665 Mowery St Atlanta, MI 49709

Listing on Zillow: 14665 Mowery St, Atlanta, MI 49709 | MLS #298755 | Zillow

Thanks haggardhouseelf for the heads up. Ironic; I have a friend in MI, who has been pushing that area for awhile. I'd live in that house in a second. Hell, I have lived in houses so austere, this one looks like a palace. I must say however, having a LOT of snow really is not my thing anymore, having lived in areas all of my life that get plenty. I feel this area of MI gets hammered.

I love super minimalism, and where many will see it as dated, I see fantastic. I have always been this way. Having been in the army, literally sleeping on top of a tank for a very long stretch in all weather, just going back to a barracks with a cot and a sleeping bag was like the Ritz. Thanks again, and happy Easter to everyone.
