When I was in high school I sailed with a group of girls through the Gulf Islands (those between Vancouver Island and mainland Canada). The water off Salt Springs Island was great for swimming off the boat. What we were told is that there is a seasonal current (called the Japanese Current then) that brought warm water.

Ocean temps of the US Pacific coast are chilly, there can be undertows and 'sneaker' waves that throw logs and can sweep away the inattentive.

I lived in and/or near Florence for 25 years. Cleawox Lake has a nice sandy beach as does Woahink although Woahink is much deeper and hence much colder yet not as cold as the ocean.
If you want warmer water, take a very short drive past Mapleton and up Hwy. 36. Many nice, warm pools that you can swim in the Umpqua.
Also, the Mapleton school does have a public pool. A very nice one.

Not anymore. They had to close it due to needed repairs. They had a referendum pass this last election, but I don't think pool repair was part of it.

Wow, that's too bad. That was the only public pool anywhere on the coast.

I just saw that I made a mistake in this post and it's too late to edit.
It should read " Many nice, warm pools that you can swim in on the upper Siuslaw River"
There is a little town of Tide that has a cool little park with access to the river. Great place to cool off in the river.

Wrong. Mingus Park in Coos Bay has a public pool. North Bend High School has a pool also.

Also the Reedsport Schools have a public pool. I can’t find any public pools in Florence, but there are a number of private pools there, for anyone willing to pay for a membership. I believe most of the coastal towns have some type of swimming pools.

Problem is swimming pools here pretty much have to be indoors to be useful, which increases the cost, and most people around here prefer outdoor activities.
