Sounds nice. We stood in our driveway and were able to see the weird light waves right before it got to it's maximum here. Then as the eclipse was waning I got an interesting photo of the effect through a shadow cast by a big sweetgum tree.

How totally cool! I'd heard of this phenomenon, but it is great to actually see it illustrated. Thank you!

Do you know the name of this phenomenon?
.

After watching it I decided the difference is even more than that. There is no comparison.

During the period of totality the sun was replaced by a black disc surrounded by a ring of bright white fire. Very, very spectacular.

People all around the neighborhood could be heard clapping and cheering. I was too along with the other people in our viewing group.

I agree.
No comparison, now that I have seen Totality.

And it was easy to get to for my family. Hardly any traffic on my choice of routes.

I was at Southbound Santee SC Rest Area for the event. We arrived 10:30; it was jammed and we drove down to the south end of the parking to find a spot. Ended up under the trees and did not even need our tent for shade. Cloudy up until 1:00 PM then completely clear.
The moment of totality is like a magic trick. The Sunlight gets dimmer and dimmer and is a fading golden light, the BAM! Diamond white light around the sun from the corona, and the Moon actually looks like a round ball passing in front of the Sun.
All around the horizon was the light you see at sunrise or sunset. As the Moon uncovered the Sun I could still see the darkness in the clouds to the East. As the light began to return we could see palm of your hand sized crescents from the light shining down through the trees.
Most amazing thing I've ever seen.
I -95 jam was difficult so we took a side route northbound.
Praise to SCDOT and SCHP for a clean area, nice restrooms and no hassling about parking.

I don't know the name... I think it's the same phenomenon that you get when you create a pinhole camera, the spaces between the leaves and branches provided the narrowed field that the sun rays could pass through. It was really striking--not sure the photo does it justice!

Did you notice the "shadow snakes?"

This is not my video. They didn't show up on my camera, but they sure were cool to see IRL.

Yeah, those were cool! I tried taking a video but, like you, it didn't really come out.

I agree. It's one of those things you just have to see to understand.
