This article could stand a little fact checking. It's the John Day Fossil Beds, and Linus Pauling won his Nobel Prize in Chemistry. And of course, Condon is not a ghost town. They got that right.

I stopped reading at "Did you know there are more ghost towns in Oregon than anywhere in the United States?" That can not be substantiated. I could name at least a dozen states with more ghost towns then Oregon.

Sumpter and Granite aren't ghost towns either.

ETA it really serves That Oregon Life right imo. The only pay they provide to writers is a byline and a heaping helping of social media spam.

AND Peace. The only person to have ever won two unshared Nobel Prizes. They drill that little factoid into you at OSU.

Here is the town of Granite. Not really a ghost town, it is incorporated. It can be accessed from the Elkhorn Scenic Byway.

First established by miners in 1862 during the gold mining era, its early history is murky. Either originally called Granite City or Independence, its final name was established when a post office was located there in 1878.

It had a population of 448 in 1870, which eventually dropped to 2 in 1960 after the gold mines were closed. Today it has grown to about 40.

I can recommend this place for those who want to spend a night or more in the Granite area:

Nice little restaurant right in town.
