One would think a gate would be a no-brainer. At least during non-business hours. Not sure why it is remotely controversial with the city.

Coos Bay Police Capt.Chris Chapanar told The World he hasn’t noticed a spike in boats being broken into, but did have advice for boat owners.

“Just like for home owners, I encourage people to keep your boats locked,” he said. “Any valuable items, make sure they aren’t in plain view or in unsecured areas on the vessel. If you’re gone for a period of time, share that information with a neighbor your trust to keep an eye on your stuff while you’re away.”
The police have given the boat owners a solution. They can accept the advice or reject it. It's their problem, not anyone else's. People need to be responsible for protecting their own property.

They weren't asking for anyone to hand them a solution.

Fisher added that he and the other boat owners are even willing to put it up themselves either physically or financially if given permission, but want to see their property protected.

The police gave them a solution. They can accept the advice or not. But hell will freeze over before we put a fence around the Coos Bay Boardwalk, or before we make marijuana illegal again, just because two dozen boat owners don't want people smoking weed around their boats. It's not going to happen, no matter how much they cry about it.

They're talking about gating the dock area, not fencing the boardwalk. Hopefully it'll happen, tweakers and other scum can do a lot of damage to commercial vessels (or pleasure boats, for that matter) even if all valuables are under lock and key. No one said anything about making marijuana illegal, but just because it's legal in Oregon doesn't mean you can smoke it on someone else's property or in a public space.

Medford gets a bad rap for car thefts and car burglaries, but, as the police constantly say, most of the cars stolen are because people leave them running with the keys in and most of the car thefts are from unlocked cars. The much smaller % of smash-and-grab car burglaries are because someone has left something too visible - a laptop, money, wallet, purse, gun, a big backpack.

In a way it is sort of blaming the victim - yes, once you could leave your front door unlocked and anything you liked in your car, but that was a long time ago.

The homeless issue is far more complicated than it used to be as well. There are many groups among the homeless and the groups need different things. There are the "marginally" homeless, people and families who were one paycheck or disaster away from being homeless who want to be brought back into the regular fold, the seriously mentally ill, the serious substance abusers, the travelers or "homefree" and any combination of the above. Once people get outside the regular home-job-family boundary, for whatever reason, getting them back in can be tough.
