Since it was a musical comedy, I don't think anything in the movie, such as polygamy, was taken seriously.

There were controversies during the filming.

Lee Marvin was an alcoholic and his drinking was a big problem.

Between shoots in the wilderness, Clint Eastwood did a lot of uncontroversial fly fishing, but in town, at night, he had an affair with his costar, Jean Seberg. Both were married.
