Wish I could find the articles, but the local paper sold last year and in the process of redoing things a fair number of articles seemed to have vanished.

The gist is: in 1990 or so, the land use laws regarding wineries and the EFU (Exclusive Farm Use) zoning was amended to bring winery use into the EFU. At the time several Rogue Valley wineries were pushing for drastic changes that would allow a sort of "agriturismo". That didn't happen at the time, supposedly because of input from the biggest wineries in the Willamette Valley (the article named names, but I can't remember them). Then in 2011 an agritourismo bill WAS passed, but wineries were specifically exempted, based on the conditional and special status they hold under the EFU zoning.

One of the last issues I read about is that several local wineries were deemed to be running restaurants on premises, which isn't allowed under their conditional status. They can serve special tasting menus or even small snacks, but full-service restaurants are not allowed, unless they change their zoning (and lose their EFU low tax rate) - which isn't even possible for some locations, especially those back in the hills, out of town.

Edgefield was a Poor Farm with huge dormitories over 100 years ago. It was the century old solution to housing the destitute elderly. Since statewide zoning didn't start until 1983, I very much doubt that it was ever zoned agricultural land.

I have never stayed there but Salishan I think would be a treat! I also recommend Best Western on the Columbia in Hood River with a beautiful pool and Jacuzzi on the river, beautiful new wing, and a great happy hour with well priced entrees. And of course the Allison in Newberg is special!

You live in Newport. How often do you stay at these two places?

That's where we stayed until I moved here. We lived in Grants Pass until 2 years ago.

Have stayed in many great Coast and Mtn homes in Oregon (tho I prefer farms and ranches, so stay in plenty of those also.)

1000's of excellent stays during last 30 yrs, some are guest cottages / MIL homes / and beach condos. Most are terrific 'view' homes with private guest space. Hosts are what make the stay wonderful, exciting, a true learning experience. (many hosts are lawyers, profs, teachers, librarians) (235 stays in 2016 alone - I flee USA during election yrs, and come back just to vote)
What are these? Can you please elaborate? We are planning a road trip into Oregon and this might be interesting to us.

Thank you!
