Okay, you draw the line where you want. To me it's the Cascades, to a few others on here it's I-5. I look at it as the change in vegetation and weather.

The state is considerably bigger than you think, though I can see how the change in vegetation past the Cascade Crest would confuse you.

The Klamath, John Day and DesChutes river basins are generally thought of as Central Oregon.

The Wallowa Mountains are NE Oregon, with the Ochoco Mountains transitional east of Prineville. The Grande Ronde River and Snake River are in NE Oregon.

SE Oregon around Burns and Steens Mountain are an extension of Nevada's Black Rock Desert into Oregon. The area is pretty dry.

SW Oregon is transitional to the Klamath Formation, of which the Siskiyou Mountains are a part.

The Willamette Valley is the well watered farming area that sits on the muck flushed in by the Missoula floods.

The Coast Range Mountains run from the Columbia to about Reedsport, where the Siskiyou Mountains take over. If you drive from Eugene to Florence, you are in the Coast Range. If you drive from Roseburg to Coos Bay, you are in the Siskiyous.

I consider the Cascade crest the dividing line. Does the water flow east or west? Columbia R being the exception.

That's how I think of it. East of the dividing line is Eastern Oregon.

Central Oregon, Northeast Oregon, Southeast Oregon, etc., are subsets of the greater Eastern Oregon.

No one I know has ever said Eastern Oregon when talking about Bend or Sisters. Or Redmond, Klamath Falls, La Pine, and the rest of the Central Oregon communities.

ETA I should probably clarify that my comment is specific to how I've heard people talk my whole life and not geographics. Not looking for some "debate" about this.

Like the Willamette, the DesChutes flows North. The klamath flows south and then west.

All the water in Oregon eventually drains west

We could break the state up several ways. If you consider all the options. Just saying East and West is a simple way to explain it. Usually I consider HWY 97 as centural Oregon, Klamath, Bend and The Dalles. But people are funny, they want to be associated with things they like, they draw lines where they want.
