Brookings is in the so called Banana Belt of Oregon and we really do get more sunny days then the rest of Oregon. Small town on the coast just 30 miles from the Caifornia border. Really pretty and friendly. Job market scarce, many retirees, great fishing (river & ocean) crabbing.

I once had a job opportunity in Brookings. Passed on it, though, as it seemed to remote for me. I'll probably go down there this summer to visit, though.

It is a wonderful little community. I went there for a three day weekend three years ago and really enjoyed it.

Brookings' mayor, Pat Sherman, resigned on March 3rd of this year. Apparently there were serious financial oversight problems which she could not resolve in working with the City Manager, the Financial Director or the other 'powers-that-be' that form the City Council. Despite her great popularity in this communty, she evidently felt ineffective in her ability as mayor to thwart the 'real estate developer' mentality that prevails in Brookings and surrounding area. It's a huge loss for us.

This town certainly does not go out of its way to be hospitable to visitors. In fact, I've heard a number of visitors complain of a feeling of indirect hostility towards them. So, glad to hear that someone found the town charming on his three-day visit (kind of glad you didn't stick around longer, or you may not have driven away with that opinion. )

There is an effort to clean up main street (Chetco Avenue) ... improve the look of the commercial buildings by repainting them and in many cases, renovating the entire facade.

Like any small town, there are problems here, but all in all, it is a nice place to live.

Default Maybe moving to Brookings

My wife and I are considering a retirement move to Brookings. Maybe in 2 years. Soliciting any info, hints, observations, opinions, etc about the area. We have family in the Eureka-Arcata area so are somewhat familiar with the coast.

The original poster did: "Small town on the coast just 30 miles from the Caifornia border."
