The crime rate in Newport seems pretty similar to many Oregon smaller cities, which would imply that it is the usual thing - theft and (unoccupied) burglary to support a drug habit, which seems to drive the majority of crime. The coast has more of an issue with living-wage, year-round jobs than a lot of cities not on the coast.

I've never heard of anything happening in any of the homes that sit empty for the winter, and there seems to be quite a few of them.
Thank you.
So I guess there aren't really very many roving local gangs of teenage miscreants causing havoc and sexing in or around our coastal communities.

It was made to seem that there is a lawless "MadMax" kind of lifestyle out there on the coast.

Well, maybe in Coos Bay.........the Washington State Aberdeen version of Oreegun........

My comments were specific to the gated community in which I live. It's not reflective of the entire coast, and I don't think I would have bought a place with the intention of leaving it empty much of the time outside of a gated community.

A quick glance at local listings shows properties in gated communities at a variety of price levels, with many of them quite affordable. I would definitely explore this option, OP.

Thanks so much, everybody, for the good insights. Not too worried about living on the coast -- we've been coastal before this and actually prefer limited heat and light and love the birds. We've lived in touristy places, too -- several years in Ashland, Oregon, for one. There the tourist season is nearly all year long and intense -- but the crime rate is really reasonable compared to Newport (just under the national average in Ashland vs. almost twice that in Newport). Probably a good suggestion to try to stay there for a bit and get a feel for the place. Thanks again, everyone!
