Thanks furyu...

I am long retired, but my former situation required travel by air from PDX to Coos Bay. One trip it was foggy on the coast so the aircraft put down in Eugene to await better conditions. When cleared we headed back and circled Coos Bay. The flight ahead of us missed the airport and crashed into the coast range.

Although heads-up technology has improved fog is still a flight risk. When it is warm in the valley it is foggy on the coast.

Driving 101 in the summer is a nice drive, but driving it in the winter months can be challenging. Hwy 101 is prone to slides all along the route. If you choose to drive from Coos Bay to SF then it would be faster to drive hwy 42 to Winston and catch I-5 to SF.

Coos Bay has a pretty big nice hospital they just renovated a few years ago. There are also tons of clinics/orthopedic/dental/surgery/orthodontist etc...facilities you won't find on most of the coast. The airport there is in the middle of building a multi-million dollar new terminal with direct flights to SFO and PDX. It is the biggest town on the coast so you will find a lot of everyday amenities not found elsewhere on the Oregon coast. Coos Bay is one of the more "rednecky" areas though but I'm optimistic that is changing.
