We don't live there but went to visit just a few weeks ago. It seems like a scenic, historic tourist town, with museums and restaurants. Our lunch was at Mo's and it was great. We only saw a handful of homeless people hanging around the waterfront. When we left and took the bridge across to Washington it was a surreal experience because we were above the heavy fog, so clear and bright but couldn't see the water.

If you are a veteran there is a PX in Astoria. A friend once said their liquor prices were excellent.

You never know unless you ask

Evidently, you are currently in Florida. Visit a PX near you, see if they will honor your service.

Keep in mind the fact that PXs are retail stores serving the military and our veterans. That population is shrinking so .. you never know. If they admit you see if there is something like an ID card that you could use at other locations.

FYI, I don't have a military background but I do think like a business person and PXs are businesses.

There is a Costco near Astoria. I doubt the PX has much better prices than Costco on liquor or anything else.

Costco doesn't sell hard liquor in Oregon, the State has a lock on that business but they can't lock out PXs.

Right...I forgot that. I'm used to going to the one in Camas which has a whole aisle of hard liquor including many Kirkland Signature branded liquors that are quite excellent.

I visit there a few times a year. Astoria proper is a long-time seaport at the mouth of the Columbia river. There are plenty of support businesses, a historic-ish downtown area, plenty of restaurants and motel/hotels. Some additional sales support from Washington state shoppers buying without sales tax in Oregon. Most of the business development is a few miles south in Warrington, OR. That's were Costco, super Walmart, Home Depot, regional department store Fred Myers, as well as smaller retailers like Petco, Staples, Marshalls, etc. are located. All built up to mainly support Washington State shoppers. Ocean beaches pretty much start in Warrington and continue south along the Oregon Coast. It's not quite like Florida beaches. Wave action is usually larger and the water is cold. Usually in the mid 50's F year round. That keeps the temperatures temperate. Not many days above mid 70s F, not many days below freezing. Lots of mid 40s to mid 60s F. Lots of rainy, cloudy days, often heavy rain as storms come in, then misty/foggy days in between storms from Oct to Jun. Yes the sun shines during those months, but much less frequently. Then about late-June to October it can be stunningly beautiful and sunny. In about an hour you can be in the west suburbs of Portland, probably two hours to Portland IAP.
