My daughter ran away several times and she is missing school. I have called the police and they won't do anything. I am also worried about her truancies. Can they have me arrested for her attendance? thank you!!

Post this in the general topics section, at the bottom of the state list, in the appropriate section and you will get a lot more responses.

Maybe they can, maybe they can't. Maybe they could but won't. In any case it seems to me that the issue is or should be why the truancies are taking place. There must be a reason, whether it is mental health or home environment or school related should be investigated, determined and treated. Ignored and untreated she will eventually be thrown out of school, unprepared for real life. And... and... who knows, but it won't be pretty.

How old is she and are you keeping records of her running away and you talking to the police?

If this were me, I would take my daughter to our family doctor and talk to him about what was happening. He would then be able to guide us in the right direction, whether it be recommending a psychologist or family therapy or possibly even talking to your daughter to see what's going on in her head. If you have insurance through work, you should call your insurance people and ask what sort of mental health benefits you have. Go to your primary doctor and get a referral, see what he thinks.

And also like another reply suggested - keep records and documentation of everything. These doctor visits will be important, too, if something should ever happen in the future. You can prove that you were taking the right steps towards trying to get her help. Even if you have to trick her into going to the doctor, or call the police department and see if there's some way you can get help in escorting her to the doctor?

+1 what Liese says. It sounds like family counseling might be helpful, the sooner the better. The family and personal relationships need to be explored to discover what's going on.
People can drop out and turn out ok (I did, earned two college degrees - but have some scars too).
Keep an open mind and good luck.

Why aren't you asking the school counselor this question?

Perhaps she did... 6 1/2 years ago when the runaway was still a child.
