For what it's worth, We live in McKinleyville, CA--about an hour south of the Oregon border on the coast. It's certainly more expensive than the areas. A nice simple 3-bedrm house might cost $235,000-289,000. We can hear the ocean from our property. Arcata is 10-13 minutes south and is the home of Humboldt State University. Real estate there is very expensive. The area, of course, is known for marijuana and liberals but there is a strong conservative element here too. It rains maybe 2 inches less a year than the Willamette Valley area. Within 4 hours, you can access six rovers and about 6 wilderness areas. We have a small airport with regular service but not to Portland anymore....mostly to S.F. San Francisco is a 5-6 hours drive. Redding, CA is 3 hours + stops for road work.
