Maui to PDX (Portland, Aloha: school, college, wages)

So to sum this up cuss I just wrote out a long out schpeel and got erased.... Well moving from maui cuss im 22 and been here 17 years and not travled at all. Im pretty friggin scared but my girl and I will be heading out there wiht about 8-10k no jobs lined up proibly no housing lined up just a cupple of homies to crash with for first cupple weeks and some aloha sprit. Reasons for PDX Concerts, off roading, more to explore, more opertunitys(what ever they are) Ill write a bit more as people respod(hopefully) but as it is would love to hear others oppions n stuff.

I suggest you go to school. A class in English 101 would be a good start. Either that or lay off the "aloha spirits" when posting.

Good grief! I hope the job you're looking for does not require any spelling or grammar skills, "cuss" you are definitely out of luck.

Moving to Oregon with no job and no housing does not seem very smart either.

Holy crap you people are mean. Poor kid is 22 and already scared. Not to mention... hello? Oregonians aren't exactly the best-educated. The quality of writing in general in this state leaves no room to cast stones.

Things are different in the islands; locals speak Pidgin a lot. As for why he's moving, it's likely the same reason many Hawaiians leave: it's extremely hard to get by there. Many people have two full-time jobs just to get by. I remember on the big island, a woman running the night shift at the gas station had all 7 (seven!) of her children there in the backroom. The fact that he's 22 and bringing $8-10k shows he's alright.

I don't have any practical advice for ya, In2Go4Lo, other than to bring your open heart and embrace the adventure. It's always scary to shake up your life and start anew, and it may not be easy at first, but go for it and see what you can create for yourself! And, as you've seen, aloha diminishes greatly when you leave the islands. It's unfortunately a harsh reality.

P.S. I moved to Oregon with no job, no housing, no bed, and no car, and only half of what he's got (around $5k, after the $1100 I spent on a one-way U-Haul).

I originally spent 5 months prior to moving, looking for work in Portland, but it was difficult from afar and nothing panned out. Finally in frustration, I said "I'm just going".

It was rough for awhile. I didn't know a soul in Oregon. I was terrified and alone, but guess what? I got it all worked out over time. I never ended up living in Portland, but several other places instead, and I'm happy where I'm ended up.

In labor or blue collar jobs, perfect grammar isn't nearly as important. Perhaps those industries are ones he's a natural fit, anyway. (Don't let these nematodas get ya down, brah!)

Actually Oregon might be one of the few places where the guy in the backhoe taking a break might be reading Goethe. Or not. But I wouldn't be so quick to put down the earlier posters for being hard on the o.p. For one thing they have a point, and for another, he is young enough to be able to do something about it. They don't call Maui, Paradise (with a capital 'P') for no good reason. The fact that the o.p. finds it hard there doesn't mean he will find PDX any easier. The ugliest four words in the English language?: "I told you so".

My point is to not tear people down at all, but rather to support. Please read more carefully to see who was doing what. The previous comments could be really demoralizing to someone who is already really afraid. I think you gotta meet people where they are and build on their strengths, not tell them all the ways you think they're not good enough.

I imagine few, if any, people need to work 80 hours a week just to get by in Portland. The cost of living vs wages are not that out of whack. Who knows what he'll experience. Of course that's true, but the difficulty to survive in "paradise" is neither a joke nor an exaggeration. Many Hawaiians have had to leave their homeland because they couldn't make it there.

Actually it’s quite possible – especially if he or she majored in German in college.

One of my best friends did exactly that. He thought he would end up getting a glamorous job as an interpreter for the State Dept., but he found that they usually hired German natives who had emigrated to the US for that job. Back then there were a lot of them.

Of course, Germans learn formal English in school and idiomatic English by watching American TV and news broadcasts. For instance, a German would have no problem in understanding these statements: "but they're not willing to give me anything except appreciation. F..k them." "F..k him…(Obama) For nothing? F..k him." "... if they feel like they can do this and not f…ing give me anything . . . then I'll f…ing go [Senate Candidate 5]."

My friend eventually got a temporary job teaching at a discount language school in Chicago. He was perpetually irked that the driver of the bus that he took to work pronounced Goethe Street go-aa’-thee.

You will also probably find backhoe operators who were English majors reading Shakespeare when on break.
