Hello, I am moving from Richland, Wa. to Baltimore, Md. & need some advice. I am shipping both cars, so I won't need to tow them. But I will be driving a 16 foot Penske truck. I can leave anytime between January and March. I am planning on driving across 40, starting in southern California. I'm not sure what the best & flattest route would be from Richland, Wa to South California. Also, when would the weather most likely be clear? I'm not from this area & I don't know when the seasons change. I would like to avoid any mountains if possible & time is not an issue. I have 11 days to make the trip, so even if I take the LONG way around, thats ok with me. Also, I don't think Penske will supply chains & I have never used them. (i grew up in Maryland & we don't use chains or studded tires) Is there a route to SoCal that won't require chains by early Feb? Any help would be great...Thanks!!!

The weather can be anyone's guess but your best bet is to plan the trip as late in the winter as possible and give yourself plenty of time.

If Penske doesn't give you chains then buy them on your own and learn to use them. (just like real truckers). Find out if these trucks have come with any form of traction tire. (I doubt they do). The interstate highway system is pretty well maintained but when things get bad they'll close the highway or require chains.

Richland to So Cal. will involve I5 and there are at least 5 mountain passes. It also seems way out of the way if Baltimore is your destination.

I'd drop down to I84/80 and head east. You be east of the Cascades which means drier and less chance of major ice or snow. You can always drop down to I70 or I40 along the way if conditions get real bad.

Thanks for the help!! I think I am going to ship my cars, put my stuff in storage & fly back to Baltimore. I can come back in April to get my stuff & drive it back to Maryland. Are the roads usually in good shape by early April?

You shouldn't have many problems (if any) in April. Should be a beautiful drive.
