Where do you guys do your research? I love City-Data's numbers, but I need more than that. I haven't found a site that really can give me an overall view of areas, what they're like, where they are on a map, etc.

Any help is great.

Local chambers of commerce are one place I look. Also, many areas have a local visitor's bureau with information and, in the case of Oregon, there are regional offices, like Central Oregon Visitors Association, each with a website. Lots of realtors keep websites with regional information. Local newspapers. Many towns have neighborhood associations that offer details about their specific areas. And, of course, there is Wikipedia

Most cities have their own websites which localized information. You can also google "interested city" and blogs. We have several local Oregon bloggers with a wide range of information.

Google earth can work fairly well for seeing a bird's eye view of an area and getting a layout - also, you could check some of those real estate values type of sites; they tend to have some useable info at times.
