My fiance and I are hoping to move to Oregon after I graduate in a few years. I'm getting my AS in Equine business management but I'm wondering how the equine industry is in Oregon?
Are there a lot of show barns, and breeders there or is everything family run?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Wow..seriously? No one knows? No one on here owns horses, rides at stables, happens to pass stables? Anything?

Yes we do have equestrian shows and such out here. I took my daughter to one as she loves horses. From what I see most things are family run with small ranches. It seems to be a very tight group of people.

Yes we have breeders here in Oregon. I'm pretty sure there is an Arabian Horse Association and I think there is a Paint Horse one as well.

Oregon has strict zoning laws and urban growth boundaries which makes much of our land expensive. We also have rules for horses that is one horse per acre. With the cost of our land and rules, I think it would be hard for a non-family farm to be profitable. I don't know that as fact, but just my thoughts.

I'm trying to think if anyone on this forum has talked about horses before, and I don't think so.

I'm no expert on horses or horses in Oregon in particular, but there have been several articles in Central Oregon papers the past several months, mostly talking about how people have abandoned horses or are trying to give them away because they can't afford to keep them due to the high cost of feed. These owners seem to be the kind that have a couple of horses for pleasure riding. Recently there was an article about Belgian draft horses here - they are popular in the summers for parades and hayrides and in the winters for sleigh rides. There is a small group of owners/breeders of these specific kinds of horses in the Bend area. Perhaps that would be of interest to you.

Some, but Oregon is not a wealthy state. You'll find established equestrian facilities in the Willamette Valley. I saw the piece about the Bend shelter - a horse the former owner paid $8000 for couldn't fetch $1500 - Bend is economically hurting right now. The Willamette Valley is healthier that way, but I would guess the whole market is slowed down, as that seems to be a discretionary expense.
