Don't believe the Cottage Grove claim unless your parents are redneck hippies.

Eugene is where all the freaks, hippies old and new, and other wierdos reside. They merge well with the ultra liberals and, greenies, and socialists that are ruining Oregon.

For all its rep, Eugene can be kind of button down. Have your parents check out Brownsville, a small town with minimal rules and regulations, halfway between Eugene and Corvallis. They should also drive out 99W from Eugene to check out Junction City and Monroe. Veneta, toward the coast from Eugene, is the home of the Oregon Country Fair (q.v.).

You notice I am recommending small communities. If they are the sorts who turn their front yards into vegetable gardens, they will get along a lot better in more rural areas.

They are looking for the kind of neighborhood where the neighbors turn their front/back yard into vegetable gardens, the neighbors get together to walk, or bbq, and definately not suburbia..something older under 200k. Smaller house, bigger yard. Just a funky, crunchy kinda vibe. Anywhere in Oregon is fine as they dont work, they're retired.

And just in case someone doesnt like the term 'hippie'...I dont mean 'hippie' in a derogatory manner, my parents are! I mean to give a name to the fun loving, all-accepting, eco-friendly people that they are

Thanks!
Funny all the responses pointing you out of Portland.
I have lived in the Sellwood, Westmoreland, and Woodstock areas for well over half a century, and all the neighborhoods I have lived in, well, that's exactly how they were except they had larger houses / smaller yards.

You can find a nice a house in SE Portland with all you are looking for.
You will just have to spend some time investigating each neighborhood to see which one suits you.

Living in Portland isn't really bad if you are a retiree, as long as you don't have arthritis and have the bucks to support you.

When I was younger, I spent all my time trying to get away from the city, but now that I'm older, the convenience outweighs the BS.

Eugene sounds reasonable. Corvallis also has quite a bit of a hippie vibe and gets 15% of its energy from renewable sources, which is more than any other place in the country.

Eugene =

Brilliant community (officials, public servants, public)
Freedom
Healthy eaters (lots of raw veggies)
Bike paths (and lots of cool old school bicycles with very interesting paint jobs)
Perfect public transportation system
The most beautifull place on earth
Thousands of great local merchants to support

* seriously, if they move anywhere else, and then visit Eugene, it's highly likely they'll move there.

Really... Eugene.

I am a Skinner/Phelps/Huff (Lane County Pioneers) and my wife is a Guthrie/Lee/Embree (an even earlier Pioneer group), so we have strong ties to Eugene, but the ultra liberals, progressives, socialists, and wannabe hippies and Californians, have made it the last place I would live in the state, with Portland running a close second. The freaks, tree huggers, and smelly vegans have destroyed this once great Oregon city. And I was conceived right there in Glenwood and the little apartments are still standing where the deed was done, so don’t tell me I am not a native.

I know, right?

Damn those selfish tree huggers who try to protect the landscape of one of the most beautiful states in the union!

Damn those vile vegans who choose not to consume the flesh of sentient beings!

Where's a DECENT American to go?

Did he not sense my sarcasm?

Well, I'm part Klamath First Nation and I could say the pioneers ruined MY Eugene before it was even called Eugene

"Tree Huggers" try to support keeping Oregon spacious and beautiful. Take a trip through California and see what a lack of controlling urban sprawl can do to a state.

Vegans are driven by compassion to lead a life that reduces pain and cruelty to others. How does that hurt or diminish your life in any way?

Vegans are driven by a constant flow of rotting vegetation expelling as methane. Man is meant to eat meat as well as vegetation. I have never known a healthy vegan. They are all so pasty white and emaciated you wonder why they ruin themselves that way. First nation, from Klamath's tribe? Which one and what has that got to do with Eugene? And the tree huggers have killed more jobs than a spotted owl, not to mention the trees they kill by obstructing forest management. Eugene is ruined. Get used to it.
