Where is considered the "line" of the end of the Willamette Valley? Part of the reason for this question is where is the "snake line"? I know from growing up around Portland that we didn't have rattlers because it was too damp so where do they start?

I'm looking at the Roseburg area as a possible place to return to and I hate snakes...LOL...

I live in the heart of rattler country and (thank goodness) I've never encountered one, despite much hiking and time in the outdoors. Plus you can usually hear them before hand. Common garter snakes you may run into though and they're entirely harmless. They may even keep rodents under control. So really you shouldn't run into too many snakes in Roseburg.

My biggest issue is not only I hate snakes is I have a dog that I will want to go on walking tours...I don't want to call them hikes as I'm old and slow...LOL.

I do have a licence to carry and I guess I can get a .38 and load it with rat shot just incase.

Consider Astoria instead. Nice hiking areas and probably the most snake free part of the state.

I've never seen a rattler in the Willamette Valley or Cascade foothills, but while living in Ashland for four years I saw plenty of snakes in the Southern Oregon region. Especially in the lower elevations of the Siskiyou Mountains and the Illinois River area--rattlers were a fairly common sight. I only knew one guy who got bit by one, and he was dumb enough to pick up a baby rattlesnake.
