Just kidding. Maybe.
Well I'm not going to be there until the end of the month, but perhaps my legendary stature preceeded me and once she got wind of my impending arrival she fled like all good people would.

By the way, I saw your MySpace page. Great taste in music!

I have lived in Oregon many years. Currently I live in a suburb of Portland. My children now live in another state but want to come back here. They've brought their friends for visits. The friends have remarked each time that they are so impressed with the courtesy of the people they deal with in the stores, restaurants etc.
I travel frequently and notice how so many drivers in other states are aggressive. That has not been the case here until so many people have moved here from other places. In Oregon, if you need to merge into another lane, you turn on your blinker and the driver in the next lane will let you in. In other states your take you life in your hands to move into another lane. Here courtesy prevails. If someone lets you into a lane or through an intersection first, give a "thank you " wave. That's the Oregon way.
We are relatively unimpressed with material things in Oregon and instead try to find meaning in the beauty of nature and a sense of being comfortable with who we are and not valued for what we own. People who've been here for some time have an inner peace about them

Default Oregon is awesome

I like Oregon, because I feel I have more freedom here. I love the fact that you can travel down the street and see signs posted that direct you to the nearest church, and 2 minutes later pull into the local strip club. I love the fact that criminals must think twice before they make that "bad" choice, because they know that your "average" everyday citizens are legally carrying concealed firearms on their person. I am not a big "hippie" supporter, but I must admit that after living here for only 8 months, I have a greater appreciation for them. It seems to me that Oregon respects everybody's way of life. I think it is a beautiful state, because the people are awesome, and I hope to contribute to its greatness! To all the native Oregonians who are worried about all of the Californians moving up... I already informed them that I was the last one that you were going to allow in and that I would be "shutting" the door after I got here. Cross your fingers!

Talking I'm long-winded...sorry!

I have just spent the evening reading the posts from this forum and I just want to say...I am NOT from California! I was born and raised all over Kansas and have lived the last 20 years all over Missouri. I have spent my whole life moving into new communities and crying when I had to leave the friends that I had made in each one of them. The one thing that I find to be consistent in every town is that there are always the have's and the have nots, the positive people with the negative, conservatives and liberals, religious and non, and crooks and druggies. No matter where you go, you make a life for yourself...other people do not MAKE your life happy. Although! Odds are, no matter where you move, your next door neighbor will likely be just the kind of person you're trying to avoid!

Missouri is a beautiful state, but our reason for wanting to leave are, tornadoes, ice storms in winter and thick humidity and heat in the summer. My husband and I have decided that Oregon is probably more beautiful and the climate much more stable. At 55 and 56 we are retiring from a life in the public school system (yikes) and just want to have some fun, be adventurous, and live a quiet life with people closer to our own age.

We are taking the first vacation in our 28 years of married life and we will fly into Eugene to spend the week scouting out the places we would like to call home. I'm sure I'll run into some of you. You'll recognize me...I smile and wave at everyone and I probably look like a hick from some strange state...other than California. Thanks for all your posts here!

Default Transplant

Yeah, I moved from California with my parents when I was a kid up to western oregon and thought it was pretty nice. I moved back to California (big mistake) when I was 20 and then to eastern oregon a year later. I never really quite fitted in here. The people in this half of the state are the rudest most self centered people I have ever meet. Maybe it's just the la grande area? Every time I make a friend the only time they contact me is when they want something. Other than that I am pretty much put on the back burner. I have been called a foreigner and told to go back to where I came from three different times. Everyone here has that Southern Redneck accent even though we're in Oregon.I am moving to Portland as soon as I can.

Default Keeping to themselves

I think Oregonians keep to themselves, for the most part. If you live in a small town, gossip gets around and you'll hear things about other people.
This is SO true. Spent 19 years in Oregon and now in Spokane and despising it intensely. Oregonians do keep to themselves. It can be hard to figure them out. I tended to think they weren't friendly. I think they just want to be left alone.

Default Fleeing Californians

Since we want to move to OR, I was wondering if there is any kind of vibe like this in Oregon, or what kind of vibe is there from the people? Do people keep to themselves, are they snobby, helpful, friendly, etc...? Thank you for reading!
Unfortunately those inconsiderate Californians are also fleeing and invading Oregon. We left a year ago and moved to Montana, but are now most unfortunately in Spokane. Through the nearly 20 years we spent in Oregon we saw a lot of change and mostly due to the influx of folks from down south. It really changed the way Oregon felt I thought. It's still a beautiful state with a ton to do, but the feeling there is different. More of a welcome to Californians so they can have your money on real estate than disliking Californians.

Default Soutern Cal and Northern Cal are VERY different

Oregonians, please DON'T let Southern Californians ruin the entire state's reputation!

Yes, Southern Cali is full of rude, spoiled, rich, materialistic ego-maniacs. People down there are A-holes and your disdain for them is well deserved in my opinion.

However, most of Northern California, Central Cal and just about anywhere that's at least 30 miles inland in California are full of cool, friendly, regular people.

I'm felt compelled to speak on this because I have lived just about EVERYWHERE in Cali. And this state has a LOT of variety and diversity, unlike lots of U.S. states where the entire state tends to have the same vibe all across.

The places that give Cali a bad name are: San Diego, Orange County, LA, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs and a few parts of SF and the Bay Area. The rest of California is actually full of good people.

Basically my point is this. You can't generalize what a "Californian" is. You gotta look at exactly what part of the state they are from, becasue within this state there are many little worlds.

I'm from Orange County and find your comment rude, and offensive. I have family that lives there and a lot of friends that in no way fit into your crass comment.

I would have to agree with "freedom." That post didn't make much sense. California is my home "for now" and while it's true that there are many superficial people, that doesn't include "most or everyone." Anyway you look at it there will always be "bad apples" and people you won't click with. It's just the way it is. I happen to be well mannered and care immensely about others, perhaps that's the liberal in me but still aren't we talking about "manners" and basic human decency?? Since when did an entire State of California fit "one" personality type?

I'll tell you, if I could find a place with no ignorant people I would be there in a heartbeat and I'm sure everyone here would follow. But there's reality!
