Anyone have suggestions on best places within driving distance to coast would be- southern Ore? Don't necessarily want to be right on coast, but close enough to not be too much of a drive there. Has to be very affordable, non-built up area, with places to rent and lots of space. Like to garden and have critters, but daughter is into oceanography. Looking for best of both worlds(we live in high country at the moment).Thanks. Maybe around Brookings, unless there is a better situation....

I don't know if you are wanting to move to the coast or you are just looking for a vacation home. Brookings is a little more expensive than Harbour and Gold Beach is really high end realty.
I would suggest you take a trip to the coast. Start at the Southern-most point you would want to locate too, and make your way up to the most Nourthern point. Along the way, stop and talk to people. Pick up real estate magazines (they are offered free of charge). Check out prices in the local stores, check out the school system ( even if your child doesn't attend public school, this will tell you something about the community.
Living farther inland is a little less expensive renting, but the gas could be a factor, if you are making regular trips to the coast.
I presently live in Cave Junction, am moving to CV within the month(if it quits snowing), so I know that area well.

In my mind Grants Pass is a nice friendly town. That's whar i get my vittles. I haven't had any problemas in over four lustrums. About 2 hours to the coast on 199.

There are a limited amount of cities that are close to the coast but not on it. One small city is Coquille. It's fairly affordable. Many houses seem to have big lots out there. You'd be about 20 minutes drive to the coast. It would not put you close to Brookings but close to Coos Bay instead.

have you considered Arcata? a little off topic (Cali not OR) but whenever the subject of the Oregon coast comes up it seems like it veers towards the consideration of Arcata for a little more sun while keeping affordability & culture in mind...
