I am wondering if any state of Oregon employee used to work as an employee of another state. I want to know if previous state work (from another state) allowed you to get a job for the state of Oregon at roughly the same level or if you had to start at an entry level and work you way up.

My husband currently works for the State of California and if we were to move he would most likely try to get a job for the state of Oregon and I want to know how comparable the job would be.

State of Oregon: State of Oregon Jobs Page

This is the State webpage that shows current job listings. I suspect that Oregon pays less than CA.

My husband worked for the state of Colorado and now works for the state of Oregon. His experience is what got him the job, though the jobs are quite different from each other. If the job is about the same as what he had in California, your husband likely wouldn't have to start out on the bottom, but jobs are very competitive right now, so the state will have plenty of applicants to choose from and they very well may try to get someone in at the lowest scale they can. My hunch is the state is going to pay no more than it needs to get qualified staff.

There will be a tendancy to promote from within for the higher level positions. That will result in most openings occurring at the entry level.

Your previous experience will help.

Thank you for your information. I realize that the pay would be a bit less but that is not so much of a problem. My husband currently works as a research analyst and it would be hard for him to get a job with the state of Oregon as and office technician/secretary.

How easy/quick is it to move up through the levels with the state of Oregon?

I had a client who was in IT with the state who said it was difficult. Not sure about for your husband's type of position.
