Hello,

My family is getting ready to move to the Portland area and have a son who is in need of a special needs school. Are all portland schools integrated? He has been in a seperate school his entire life and we don't like the idea of the integration especially since he is no where close to being his age mentally. Please help!!

What kind of special needs school? Public schools are all integrated. There are special needs classrooms within the schools, but the classrooms are in the schools.

Sorry about not explaining fully. There is no way he would be able to be part of an integrated school. He will be 11 years old an Feb. and he is as big as my 5 year old daughter height and weight. He only weighs 40 lbs. He doesn't talk, has trouble transistioning from activity to activity and doesnt understand basic commands like if you tell him he needs to sit quietly. Because of that, he is still not potty trained among many other things. We need more of a life skills type of education. Is that offered in the public school systems?

Yes, they have special ed classrooms for kids like that. In Salem we call them SCIP classrooms, but I can't remember what they call them in Portland.

Those kids have their own self-contained classroom in the school so the classroom is integrated in the school, but the kids are not. It costs too much to operate a separate building so the kids just have their own space. Some special ed classrooms are in outside modules to reduce the sensory overload that can occur.

You can call the PPS (Portland Public Schools) office and ask for a list of their classrooms with a brief description.
