Would appreciate information on Lakeview, OR and area ... relocation destination or forget-about-it area?

We really need to know more about your preferences, but Lakeview is very remote. Too hot in the summer, cold in the winter, no jobs except county work, agriculture, and very limited service jobs. Just not much going for it except the historic downtown. There is no towns of it's size for a long ways in all directions, in some cases, several hours.

I am sure there is a tight knit community, and there are a few events during the year. Just a remote, hard working, conservative town in a forgotten part of Eastern Oregon.

This seems to be an "official" video for the town, and it gives you a good idea of what to expect.

My father and his wife moved there last year to be near some of her family and have since moved back. They said it was extremely hot, dry and dusty in the summer and VERY cold in the winter. However, the main reason they moved back was because there wasn't much for them to do there. Also, supplies were expensive and they had to drive for a very long ways to get to decent prices.

It's a great place if one wants a small community with very slow pace of life.

It depends upon what you like. It's an excellent area for rock hounds.

Real estate is really cheap. There aren't many jobs, but it isn't a bad place to retire if you are a desert rat. I looked at a gas station/ country store/ post office/ RV park that was for sale in that area. Excellent price for it and it did business with rock hounds who came to the area to dig sun stone, so it managed to make a profit.

thank you everyone! after more research we decided against it ... we're looking for affordable retirement with garden space with a nice community - fishing and going out in our canoe is the main outdoor recreation for us - plus I like to craft and he likes woodworking - close enough to good medical services is important - we live within a 1/2 hour drive of medical providers now which is ok - we just want out of CA.

To judge Lakeview (or anywhere in Southern Oregon) by this last summer, which was the hottest on record, is probably not accurate. Late July and early August, the average high is in the low 80s and the average low in Dec and Jan is around 20°.

Obviously the extremes are greater - the record high is 108° and the record low is -25°. By general US standards, there are places that see greater temp swings than the average temps. Keep in mind that the record high in Portland is 107° and the record low is -5°.

It is a very small town, mostly ranchers and retirees and isolated from the main highways. Gardening can be difficult without a greenhouse or at least cold frames as the growing season is only around 71 days (late spring and early fall hard freezes limit the season).

For cheap place to retire, near shopping, fishing, canoeing, good medical, look at Prineville and Crooked River Ranch, near Bend.

Look at the area around Klamath Falls-- but not so far away as Lakeview.

There is an area called OWW (Oregon Water Wonderland) between Sunriver and La Pine, where prices are relatively cheap and it is close enough to Bend to go in and shop or see a doctor.
