I grew up in North Dakota so I know all about winters and Oregon and Washington do not come close to what you and I have seen.
What kind of job or jobs are you looking at?? I am a computer technician - currently a senior level. I currently work for the local school board, I don't make a huge salary, however I don't' think I can swing a pay cut either. I am very well rounded when it comes to computers, I have worked my way from being a hardware technician, to network field support to a software technician, to help desk, and now to server and data base administration. I am also working my way to becoming a personal trainer, and might try to get myself certified in that before moving, as I've seen more jobs in that then technology.
You can see some of the types of jobs available in the Seattle area/metro by looking on line at the Seattle Times. Ok… Cool, I don’t know the names of all the papers, so this helps.
The economy here is very good and their are lots of jobs. The only issue here is it is kind of exspensive but then again you can live further away and commute. The pay is higher here than Oregon. I make twice what I made in Oregon on the coast. Then again it is cheaper to live there. Some of the Oregon coastal areas are really nice but not alot there for jobs. Ok.. so does that mean that the pay is sorta equal to the economy, Washington pays better but is more expensive… does it all sorta even out?? Or is it truly better to choose Washington.. and if so, what is along the coast that would be worth looking into?

First, I would pick coastal areas that you are interested in and check out their newspapers(Sunday) and see what they have to offer. You can also try Craigs list. Coos Bay also has the Southcoast Shopper. Also check the Nickle Adds---its a small paper that is throughout Oregon and I believe Washington and focuses on different areas. You can find all these on line.
City-Data has a tremendous amount of stats which you could use---info on job market, housing, weather, etc. I’ve been checking out city-data.. it’s an awesome resource
Lastly if you do choose to look more into Washington, stay out of king county as that is where it is most exspensive. Mental note taken, thank you
Is it just you moving??? I would be moving with my daughter best friend and potentially my daughter as well. So.. I am looking for a 3 bedroom that accepts pets as both my daughter and I have a dog, hers is a chihuahua and mine is a lab cross, mine will be the harder one to find accommodations for, as hers is so tiny you can hardly see it.
What kind of needs do you have---rather preferrences????? I would prefer to stay close to the coast, and have the ocean at my beck and call, I don't really want to have to drive to be there. I am an avid road bike rider, and would also like a place that has plenty of group rides in which to choose from. I'm athletic, so I'm looking for that type of community as opposed to big city living. I really don't want to live in Seattle or Portland as the city is exactly what I want to get away from, I'd really like the simplicity of the coast and small town living.
Schools, I would like to be able to continue on with my education, community colleges, universities.... which area is better for that?

If you give me more info, maybe I can be more specific. As for being close to Canada, that's my daughter's preference, I personally like the warmth of Florida and would move much further south if she allowed! I’m more worried about being able to live comfortably then the actually physical location.

Have I left anything out... probably... but we'll cross that bridge when the time comes.

My best advice is to move into this area and live in a small town. It is more affordable. The commute is not that bad depending and their are lots of layed back areas. I know as I moved from rural Oregon to here and I hate the big city so I am outside and have a great place that is close. It is biker heaven up here. Alot of people ride bikes all year round--my cousin is a biker and he lives in Auburn. Lots of conventions, etc.
I really do not like the big city and am more of a small town person but this place has alot to offer. If you want to go to do something, it is a short distance away but you still can live rural.
The area is very culturally diverse. Also, this is the IT capital of the US with microsoft, google and soon yahoo so you might consider that. Their are alot of small IT companies. In fact, they are taking over. You might want to post a resume on Monster.com for one.
I think you should be able to find a place as long as you do not want to live in Seattle and really it takes a special kind of person to do that IMO.
Well, I got to go and I wish you well. My husband is having surgery on Thursday and I work full time. I would be willing to answer any questions you might have or give you any input but because of the above, it would be better to email Mod cut[/email] and I will respond.
Oh and IT people are payed very well here and if you live in King county your exspensives are higher but if you live outside of that you can do very well. The commute is not usually that bad depending and is do able. I know as that is what I and my husband do. Hope this is of some help.
I really do not think their is much for you on the Oregon coast but I could be wrong so check it out and good luck. The Oregon coast is great but jobs are another issue.
Also, for got to add their are alot of personal trainers up here. Since I move which was about 3 years ago, I have met several.

I am moving to the Oregon coast from San Diego in a few weeks. I lived in the Seattle area up until about 6 months ago and I miss the rain. I know some people will think I'm strange for wanting to move from San Diego to the Oregon Coast, but it is a perfect fit for me.

I am self-employed (I do radio and television commercials), and I like a slower lifestyle. I don't really need a nightlife and being that close to the ocean where I can take my dog for walks is going to be great. I am also a sucker for a good winter storm and I hear the Oregon coast has some impressive ones.

The issue I've been running into so far is trying to find a place that allows pets. If anyone has any good leads on rentals that would be great. I check craigslist but there aren't as many postings as I'm sure there are places. I am looking primarily along the central coast from Lincoln City down to Florence.

Thanks in Advance,

Rich

I do not think so but I grant you it is different than back East and I would not want to live there. Snobs are everywhere their is money. It depends in what area you live in. I wish you luck and sorry you had a bad experience.

Default To CanadianBiker

You may want to look at the Veneta area in Oregon. It is west of Eugene, east of the coastal town of Florence .

You would be in the middle of the coast that you want and the biking you love.

Eugene offers alot of sporting opportunities and outdoor activities. Hiking, rock climbing, biking are all big in Eugene. (And so is DUCK football!) Has job opportunities if somebody applies themselves and really wants a job. (not implying you don't....aimed at people who complain about no jobs, but don't TRY to find one) Lane Community College, Northwest Christian College, University of Oregon (GO Ducks!) and Pioneer Pacific College are all in Eugene.

Veneta is a nice, small affordable town about 14 miles west of Eugene. Florence is 54 miles to the west of Veneta. Florence also has an Indian casino if that interests you. The wind does blow through there though. We tried to camp there for a week last summer, but after having to keep our kids in the trailer because they were getting sand-blasted, we packed up early and went home.

I lived in Coos Bay for 20 years and couldn't wait to leave! We live in a smaller town outside of Eugene and love it. The Eugene newspaper link is Home Page: The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore. you should be able to find Veneta housing in that, as well as job info. Eugene is a technically rich area, so I wouldn't think getting a job here would be difficult. One direction may be at the new River Bend hospital opening in August. (currently Sacred Heart)

Good luck in where ever you choose!

I would advise anyone to think long and hard before moving to the Oregon coast (the prozac belt). I acceped a job at the hospital in Coos bay and lived in Bandon. Rentals in Bandon are few and far between and most don't allow pets. I did find a place on Hwy. 42 between Bandon and Cochille but when I moved in, surprise, no water (it was spring fed). The so-called repairmen couldn't figure out how to fix it. This went on for two weeks so when I finally moved out the golf caddies had snatched up every other available rental. I ended up quiting my job and moving back home (the southwest). My overall thoughts are that most people I dealt with are nuts, the hospitals, especially the VA in Roseburg, are crap and if a person gives you his word it's worthless. I moved there with a positive attitude and it went south real fast. Beware of this place.

Cottage Grove is nice, people are friendly if you are friendly. Brand new high school, brand new hospital. But then I'm slightly biased

I have found the people in Lincoln City to be especially friendly. Maybe it is because the town is based on tourism? I have always thought the people I've dealt with in stores go way above the call of duty. I have a comparison as far as hardware stores: For 6 years now, we have been remodeling our beach retirement house in LC. We have spent a good part of our lives in the local Ace store. Those people are almost like 2nd family now. They are so helpful, even with all of my dumb questions and paint problems. Sometimes I have to go to the hardware store in Salem, and it is awful. They do not care one bit and I always feel like I am intruding. Dumb comparison, but true. It could be that in smaller towns, you just get more personal service, regardless of where.

Default Alaskan 21 years, grew up in Oregon thinking about retiring on the Coast

Wow, this is quite a thread. Thanks everyone, positive and negative for the input. I grew up in Eugene, joined the Navy at 17, saw the world for 6 years, got a job in Eugene which took me to Eugene again, Roseburg, and Albany before moving to Fairbanks in 87.

I have loved Fairbanks, now have an extended family here, but the winters are wearing on me (imagine that) and with several years to retirement I am putting out feelers. One thing for sure, no winters in Fairbanks. Summers my wife and I will be here most of the time. I can't take it any more.

I dislike hot weather, big city life, traffic, people in a hurry. I have always wanted to live by the sea, probably one reason I joined the Navy. My current home sits right on the Tanana River. So this brings me to the notion of moving to the Oregon coast, probably between Florence and Lincoln City. Question is, can we handle the rain, wind and grey? I always loved going to the coast, and Florence was the closest place for us.

Which communities would be the most affordable to settle down in when it comes to housing? What is the market like now? I have some time yet to work, but am starting to look. Another option is the Port Angeles to Sequim area, which gets a lot less rain than the Oregon coast.

Input is welcome and appreciated.
