My g/f & I are looking into places in UT, NV & OR to relocate. We don't want rain to add to her depression problems in gloomy weather too, so the PNW near the coasts are out. Is Baker City safe, affordable, decent & nice to live? I like UTAH (but we're not Mormon), think NV is sketchy (at best) in almost all places, & thus wouldn't mind being on Pacific timezone in OR, so I could sleep in more. Any ideas would be helpful.

Good eye. Baker City is a diamond in the rough. I second the job market challenges. But definitely worth checking out.

Baker City and Eastern Oregon -- corrupt, ignorant, backward. Rednecks, retirees, recluses and rehabers. 7 years here has opened my eyes. And yes, forget about finding a good job.

Baker City is nice, meets all of those criteria. It is quite a ways from any "big city services", like medical specialists, big retail centers, airports, etc... It also gets quite a bit colder than a lot of eastern Oregon, but that could be a plus. It's absolutely beautiful too, with tons of outdoor things to do.

I love it every time I go to Baker City. The Elkhorns right near town. The rich history of mining that made it what it is today. It is a very tranquil place. The Jubilee in the summer is awesome time. Open roads to many directions for a scenic drive. Many places to traverse from there for different sites. Anthony Lakes is also some good winter sports. Go to Joseph for the Chief Joseph days, and go up the Tram occasionally to see forever. I personally like the snow. It beats the rain any day, its easy to just brush off of you.

Right now would be the time to visit Baker and see if her depression problems continue. Most people usually do better there, but some do worse.

You might also look further east to Ontario, or a bit west to LaGrande. Both towns are a bit larger then Baker. I'd personally take LaGrande over the other two, but I know a lot of people who love Ontario.
