We are moving to Oregon in the spring (Corvallis to be exact). We are an African-American family with two children. As I've been going thru the many Oregon threads here on city data, it has been making me a little nervous about the lack of diversity that we may encounter. Is this nervouseness unfounded, am I just getting myself worked up for nothing. Honest, thoughtful perspectives would be much appreciated.
TIA.

From the Corvallis Gazette Times:

The booths at the Saturday Corvallis Farmers' Market have a wild mix of fresh produce, tasty food, plants and flowers.
But this week, a table just outside the bazaar offered something more bizarre - "Meet a Black Guy."

The whole story here:
‘Black Guy’ booth livens up Corvallis Saturday market

thanks for the article link.
I don't know what to think of it really-people seemed open to the guy at the market, but him having a stand to meet people at the market is beyond interesting. I don't think this is helping my nervousness, really.

Corvallis is very Caucasian and I think you will be fine there. You do have to feel comfortable with a sea of white faces though. Unfortunately Oregon in general is very Caucasian as our diversity comes from Asian, Hispanic and Native American populations.

It's a nice city with solid schools. Welcome to Oregon!

That guy might be a child of God but he isn't black. Yaphet Koto, black. Samuel L. Jackson, black.

H, black.

What aspect of diversity are you concerned about?

If you prefer to hang around with other blacks and be immersed in everyday black culture then it'll be slim pickins.

If however you simply want to avoid any racial prejudice then you'll do just fine in Corvallis and most other cities in Oregon.

I woked in Corvallis for 5 years and I think you'll feel at home there. Because of the university & Hewlett Packard, there is a good mix of people there. My brother raised his mixed race daughter (African Am & Caucasian) there & she was more than welcome into the community. She was even her school's student body president.
Don't be nervous. Corvallis is a very liberal and accepting town.

thanks for all the responses!
I guess I'm not looking to be immersed in "black culture" so to speak (I'm already immersed, if you know what I mean ,-but I guess I was worried more with the acceptance issue. When we visited Oregon we just loved the scenic beauty and most of the people we came in contact with were friendly. But of course a visit is just what it is-a visit. I suppose I just wanted to have more insight on Corvallis itself.

I don't live in Oregon anymore, but I have something to say about the tiny town I grew up in and diversity and I would hope it would be true everywhere. The town was in Alaska and it was a really small, almost 100% white town, and we were always excited for the opportunity to meet people different from us. We had one student of hispanic origin and one who was African-American and we were so eager to get to know them. One year we heard that we were going to get a black teacher and everyone was so excited! She was probably the most popular teacher in the whole school. Years later I was so surprised to encounter racism, it has never made sense to me. I hope if you move to Oregon that you are pleasantly surprised and it goes well!
