My husband and I are planning to relocate to Oregon. Jobs are not an issue, as I work from home and husband works in another state. We are looking at Medford because of the proximity to the coast and the airport, as well as the nice weather. What we need to know is where the good areas are. Planning a visit in June to check it out and planning the move by fall. We would like to rent at first to get a feel for the area but even with renting it is important that we are in a safe area. We have 3 teenagers who have grown up living rural yet close to town. It would be nice to have that in Medford if possible. We are upper middle class (not rich) and do not want to be in an area where there are only mansions.
Sports are big for the kids as well as the quality of the high school. The kids are also part hispanic which is a concern if there are race issues in the area. We don't mind a little bit of a drive to Medford if there is a good place outside of Medford. Any ideas? We are not looking at the Portland area because of the rain, so any ideas should be focused in the southern part of Oregon. Thanks so much!

If you are under the impression that the weather is drastically different in the northern and southern parts of western Oregon, you have been misinformed. There are marginally fewer rainy days in Medford, and significantly more hot dry days in summer, but the difference is negligible in terms of overall climate quality. Read this thread.

Medford winters vs. Seattle area??

Thanks for that, I had been misinformed! Another area we are looking at is Bend. We are moving for better weather, period. We currently live in cold and snow all winter and I am dealing with SAD. Not sure I could handle a summer full of 90 degree days either.

Not sure where you are coming from, but most people don't move to Oregon for better weather. If you have SAD I would reconsider Oregon as a choice.

Bend is cold in winter and summer is hot. It's dry heat though because it is high desert out there. Since weather is your requirement for moving, maybe you can tell people exactly what kind of weather you want.

Alaska. Anything is better. We are also trying to avoid moving back and hear that most "Alaskans" that move to Oregon like it there and stay.

Sun in the winter without snow or rain is more important than a warm winter. Not used to heat but I can handle dry heat better than humidity I guess.

Ah...compared to there I think Bend would be fine. You will probably still have SAD here in Oregon, anywhere you go, but it might not be as pronounced.

Thanks! I will focus some more research on the Bend area. I'm a little SAD to hear that Medford isn't what I had hoped for. It was looking so perfect otherwise!

I spend a lot of time in both Oregon and Alaska.

You say your husband works in another state so I'm guessing he's a rotational worker in AK. I think that Horizon offers flights into Bend which would probably work for you.

Alaskans who experience SAD in Alaska don't necessarily do so in Oregon. I flew down once in Dec. and even though it was a cloudy day, the light hurt my eyes.

Howdy Can't Wait...

I was in Grants Pass today. It was 56 & mostly Sunny.

http://www.google.com/search?don&#39...aql=&aqi=j1&oq=

The winters are mostly pretty mild in the Rogue Valley.

North of Roseburg gets a lot more rain normally then we do. We get usually about 20" to 30" (mostly closer to 20").

For over 23 years i've loved living in the mountains west of Wolf Creek. Sometimes in the summer it will get over 100 some days but i have shade from the forest. I don't even have A/C. I just use fans.

The winters here around Grants Pass are about 10 to 15 degrees warmer then Bend area.

Best of Luck to you in your search.
