If you seriously think these people are the first racial supremacists to waltz into the State of Oregon, you're disillusioning yourself. This state used to have the highest KKK population in the nation. Racists are everywhere and chances are had this not hit the news, nobody would know about it.

I didn't mean to imply that they could be denied purchases of housing or real estate based on ideology. What I meant is that the locals seem like they will give the cold shoulder, and if there are any privately owned businesses there, the businesses can refuse to do business with them, thus making life for them a bit more difficult.

Rep for your post, though. Sometimes the "sword of freedom" cuts too much, and sometimes not enough.

What are you saying? There is NO relationship between Libertarians and White Supremacists. Absolutely none. Libertarians are against all forms of discrimination, and are for equal opportunity irregardless or religion, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc. We modern day Libertarians embrace the live and let live values of the Hippies of 30 yrs ago. We are for private property rights, against development impact fees, and against wars overseas. Freedom for all. At the same time if citizens in an individual City want to implement socialistic principles, then they have the right to do so...

How many raving psychopaths have 10 year olds in tow? I suppose it’s possible, but which scenario is more likely?

It’s been my experience that the simplest explanations are the most likely.

I remember there was an enclave of skin-heads in the Hawthorne/Buckman neighborhood long before the area became trendy. Here is a sample of their history.

Skinhead Against Skinhead - TIME

It isn't uncommon to see swastikas drawn on walls and bus stop shelters in the area even today. There are people who think this is cool I guess. But the hard core and dangerous so called "anti-racisit" Skin Heads left this area in the early 90's when their actions became too well-known. Secrecy is important to them and they were getting too much publicity. Also when the neighborhoods started becoming gentrified and people actually began living in the houses that had been formerly rented, there were fewer and fewer places for the Skin Heads to go; along with the drug dealers and other undesirables who lived here.

The neighbors used to joke how we didn't have to watch cop shows. Every Saturday night you could find a drug bust or some sort of excitement down the street or in my case right next door. People frequenting Hawthorne today would probably find all this difficult to believe.

Although I don't agree with their ideology we get on a slippery slope when we start to deny people basic rights in the United States based what they believe in. As a citizen of this country you have the right to live anywhere you desire and to establish any type of following as long as it falls with the laws of the state and nation. I thought we did away with this type of bias in the late 60's when blacks were denied housing just because they were black. Now here we are about to deny a group of people the right to live in Oregon because we don't agree with their moral or political views. Is this the kind of country you really want to live in, because next time it may be your beliefs, morals and political views that come into question.

This is a tough delima for someone like me...

Lets say they allow 1000 hardcore racist segrigationist to move in...
Do you think those racist segrigationist will turn around and allow me my right to buy a house in that area?

I mean what is their intentions? is it to bring unity or strife?

The blacks wanting to live wherever were not 'seperatist'...
These racist segragationist are...they have an agenda, a goal a vision...

And to think that they are just going to be 'nuetral' is unrealistic...

Like allowing 1000 Al Quida members to move into an area and buy land and realistate...

It's a tough scenerio...
I think it depends on the groups aim...or intent...if they intend to move in and then turn around and harrace other citizens of color...than is that fair?
I don't know...

Much as a lot of folks don't like it, this is true. Many discussions in my house on this one, but freedom - like responsibility - has a lot of pitfalls! We must use our freedom wisely.
I remember a question posed to me once. Is it freedom if MY freedom causes someone else to give theirs up? Is freedom really FREE?

Funny thing is, if I were in a militia group, I would use other peoples sense of 'freedom'...against them...

They, the community, no matter how malice my intent...would allow me and my group to move in...and once we moved in...we would run for office, take control...and then implement our 'plan'...

Then in the end, those who wanted us to have freedom, would loose thiers....

I agree that it is largely the remoteness, and generally the whiteness they like. And probably affordable real estate for a "compound." Poor John Day. I would certainly do my best to keep such freaks out, but I doubt the legality of overt discrimination. Crazies like this have preyed on E. Oregon before. Google the Rajneesh who moved in an tried to take over Antelope back in the 1980s. Crazy stuff. Nowhere is safe from weirdos, it seems. Sigh....

To my African-Amercan, Mexican-American, Indian-American, yada yada yada-America fellow citizens, feel free to move to Oregon, if you can score a job. We are not a racist state, and anyone willing to help make Oregon better is welcome. I cannot think of single person I know who feels otherwise.
