I'm a 30 year old Oregon native who has been all over this great country and the world. Portland is about as safe of a large city as you are going to find. Does it have its areas that are less safe than others? Yes, but compared to other large cities such as NYC, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, London, etc. It is extremely safe. As is Oregon as a whole. Portland as well as the rest of the state does have riff raff just like anywhere else but for the most part it's not dangerous. I've been on the wrong side of the tracks in Chicago after dark and you do not dare drive with your windows down and NEVER get out of your car. Being in a rental car with out of state plates is another big no-no, but that's what I had. I was lucky to be with someone who knew the area. I have a friend who worked at a Subway in that area and everything was behind bulletproof glass. The supposedly bad parts of Portland are like Disneyland in comparison.

If you're not in Portland then you have even less to worry about.

No offense but I find this to be a silly question. There are just too many choices. And as one person asked "Safe from what?"

When I first moved to Portland many years ago, people did not lock their doors. There was not much crime to speak of. As the city grew so did crime. It's inevitable in any growing city or town even in lovely Oregon.

What is safe? You can go live in the woods and get eaten by a cougar or a crazed axe murderer can chop you up in your cozy suburan McMansion or you can be robbed in a gated community.

You have to take your chances no matter where you choose to live.

Hmmmmm.........perhaps too many "silly"/loaded questions contributed to the OP's removal from the site.

Let's consign this one to the archives.
