Hey guys, I am driving up the Oregon coast this summer. What should I not miss on the way up? I will also take a road through eastern Oregon, what's cool to see out there?

If you have the time, the John Day Fossil beds are pretty cool.

Eastern Oregon road trip:

Leave I-5 and drive to Sisters (several routes are possible). Very cute town.

Almost all of the following are on Oregon Scenic Byways. You will never get bored. They are two lane but lightly traveled and very safe.

From Sisters drive past the fossil beds John Day Fossil Beds National Monument (U.S. National Park Service) to John Day and then to Sumpter (visit the gold mining dredge and ride the restored steam locomotive train). Sumpter Valley Railway Home

From here until Joseph you will be mostly driving through 2.3 million acre Wallowa-Whitman National Forest Area. Wallowa-Whitman National Forest - Welcome! From Sumpter drive to Baker City. If you have an hour to spare, take the road that goes past Granite and through the Anthony Lakes area (7000 ft. elevation alpine lakes) to Baker City instead of the more direct route (very beautiful).

Baker City is a good place to stay for the night. The Geiser Grand:

Outside Baker City, visit the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and find out what it was like when life was really hard. Oregon Trail Interpretive Center | Oregon/Washington | Bureau of Land Management (BLM) | US Department of the Interior Then drive through Halfway to Oxbow to Hells Canyon. Hells Canyon Wilderness

Take a jet boat ride.

When you are done with your boat ride, drive to Joseph via the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. Recreational Activities In Joseph, take the tram ride and look at the bronze sculptures. The official Joseph Oregon site featuring Wallowa Lake, Joseph Lodging Info

When you are done you can go home via La Grande and I-84.

The whole coast is great, but Bandon and Cannon Beach are standouts to me. I did a similar trip some years back, and I really regret not visiting Crater Lake national park. Bottom line: there are so many beautiful parts of Oregon, that it is literally impossible to hit them all in a single visit.

Where are you coming from?

Are you entering near Brookings? Or from I-5 and going east from Grants Pass?
