After doing some more research online, I'm wondering which would be better for our family? We had been concentrating our search on Oviedo. Is there much a difference between the two? If you had to choose, which would you choose?

We have 4 children, so schools are a concern. We don't have to worry about commutes as we both work from home.

Thanks for your opinions!

Depends on what you're looking for. Schools are good for both, but Oviedo has a slightly better reputation. When we were house hunting, we looked in Sanctuary and Live Oak in Oviedo. They seem really nice. We seriously considered that new section of Live Oak by Horseshoe lake. Seems like a very nice neighborhood.

In the end, we felt more comfortable in Winter Springs. I just have a thing for the Tuskawilla area and the section of 434 between Hwy 417 and the Town Center, and even a little further down past the post office. There's a true small town feel. The police department set up movie nights in various neighborhoods and pop popcorn for the kids. All you have to do is call them up and set up a date and it's free. The police even escort Santa(Santa sits in the back of the police pick up truck) through all the neighborhoods and throw candy canes to the kids. The town has a very close relationship with the schools. We always participate in the Homecoming parade, Christmas parade. Small as it may be, there's always the fall festival, Christmas parade/event, art festival. 4th of July is big with fireworks over Lake Jesup. It's just a nice place to live with many parks and even a new dog park.

I don't know as much about Oviedo except they have a great baseball program. Oviedo HS seems to be great in sports, but about half of Tuskawilla homes in Winter Springs are zoned for Oviedo HS. I'm sure Oviedo has similar town events, but I can only speak for Winter Springs. You can't go wrong with either. Just gotta come and visit and see where you feel more at home at. I do have to say that if my only choice in Winter Springs is the section closer to longwood, then I don't think I would enjoy it as much. It's just too far from "town" and loses the small town feel.

Good Luck!

the wealthier areas of Winter Springs were all rezoned for Oviedo high to balance things out a bit. This took place I believe in 2007.

Personally I prefer Winter Springs by far. It's just a really nice area. Oviedo not so much but there are a few places. Lake Charm in Oviedo is the nicest part in my opinion and the only place I'd ever look at.

I traveled to Orlando on a house hunting trip from Nevada back iin Nov. Commuting was a concern as well as schools. Loved Oviedo...esp Sanctuary and Live Oak and did overkill in the research for Seminole county schools. They are top notch. Cant compare the two but you will have no regrets if you choose Oviedo. Good Luck and visit both before making a decision.

Your Oviedo schools are the highest rated schools in the area. The next best would be found in Winter Park.

Oviedo to me has more a "new rural" feel with some very nice communities. Winter Springs has a more refined feel to me with older homes and more expensive ones too.

You can get far more bang for the buck in Oviedo. It is still pretty convenient to access the highways to get to other areas or the parks.

Thank you all for your responses. I truly appreciate your opinions. I plan to visit in April/May and will make a list of areas to check out beforehand!

I do like the small town feel that Cigarboo mentioned in Winter Springs, so....!!!

Would you say Winter Springs is geared more towards younger families? Our children are 13, 9, 7 & 3 so I really want to find a place where they can make friends easily(and me too! ).

I saw a house for rent in Tuscawilla Trace. Any feedback? Is this the area Cigarboo walking speaking of? It looks like it could be on googlemaps.

I saw a house in Oviedo, behind Oviedo Park Crossing that I also like.

Any opinions?

Thanks!

I know that area pretty well. It's right behind the Highschool which from what I hear is very good. Indian Trails MS and Keeth Elementary are just down the road. You can walk to the anemic town center. The economy has not been kind to the town center, but there are still a few restaurants that are good. There is a bald eagle's nest right behind Tuscawilla Trace and it is amazing to watch them fly around. You can see them right from Tuskawilla Rd. You can also walk to the Cross Seminole County trail. That'll take you to Oviedo and even up to Lake Mary, but closer by it'll take you to Central Winds park with playgrounds and ball fields.

I think a rental is a good way to get to know the area as it seems home prices are still unstable. There are probably many other rentals in the main areas of Tuskawilla, by the golf course. The area feels safe. I think it's a fantastic place for your family, but only you can decide by coming and checking out the place. And of course, I'm a little bias.

BTW, where are you moving from?

Wow, I thought Oviedo would have had more votes than Winter Springs. I agree with many of the posters here though. You cant go wrong with either, in my opinion.

Thanks ComSense! I appreciate your thoughts!

Cigarboo--we are relocating from the great state of NJ! I definitely plan on a visit in the next month or so. I know I just need to get a feel for a place. I really like the idea of a small town feel. Lots to think about!
